After Year of Unprecedented Changes in Healthcare, Intermountain Healthcare’s CEO & President to Deliver Annual Report to the Community on Friday

Marc Harrison, MD, President and CEO of Intermountain Healthcare.

WHAT:

Healthcare in America is facing unprecedented change. This year alone, 11 U.S. hospitals closed their doors — in addition to the 85 rural hospitals that have closed since 2010. Major mergers between companies such as CVS Health and Aetna are becoming regular occurrences, and healthcare costs continue to rise at alarming levels.

In light of the rapid and relentless changes in healthcare, Marc Harrison, MD, Intermountain Healthcare president and CEO, will report on Intermountain’s innovative efforts to enhance the health of the community in Utah and the role Intermountain is playing as a transformation leader.

Dr. Harrison will also discuss Intermountain’s efforts to move upstream through a greater focus on prevention, overall wellness, and making healthcare more affordable and accessible. Intermountain has also worked to make safety, quality, and satisfaction a part of every interaction.

In 2018, for example:

  • Intermountain joined with other non-profit healthcare systems to start a new non-profit generic drug company called Civica Rx to battle skyrocketing prices and shortages created by Big Pharma.
  • Intermountain continued to work to reduce the number of opioid medications being prescribed.
  • Through programs like the Zero Harm patient safety initiative, Intermountain has seen a significant improvement in infection rates since 2017.
  • Intermountain is redesigning its primary care model to help keep people well and out of the hospital.
  • Intermountain has enhanced access to care with new hospitals in Layton and Spanish Fork and expanded hospital services in St. George, along with new clinics in Layton, Lehi, and Sandy.
  • Hours at those clinics have been extended to better meet needs of the community.
