Safety Advocates Urge Caution; Grandmother Shares Story of Grandchild’s Near-Drowning

In Utah, drowning is the second-leading cause of death for children under age 14. With that statistic in mind, safety advocates from Primary’s Children’s Hospital and affected families recently joined together to issue a call to the community for extra vigilance this summer when children are near fast-running streams and rivers, pools, ponds, or other water sources.

One of the attendees was a Utah grandmother very nearly lost her two year-old grandson to an accidental drowning. The grandmother was inside her home when her grandson toddled out of the room. After asking other kids where the boy went, the grandmother looked at the swimming pool, which appeared to be calm. She had a strong feeling she should check the pool more carefully, then found the boy, hidden by the pool’s overhanging edge, floating face down in the water. She pulled the boy out and began CPR. Between her efforts and those of first responders, the child was revived. One year later, he is a happy and energetic three year-old.

The family joined Primary Children’s Hospital in offering ways to keep children safe around water this summer.
