Marc Harrison, MD, president and CEO of Intermountain Healthcare, has announced that he was recently diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the blood. He will begin treatment for the condition at Intermountain and plans to return to the office in early 2020. He will continue to serve as president and CEO of Intermountain while undergoing treatment.
“Cancer is never good news, of course, but I have every reason to hope for a successful outcome,” said Dr. Harrison. “I am proud and grateful that my care will be provided by Intermountain caregivers – the best in the land. I look forward to their care and support as I continue to serve our communities as CEO of Intermountain.”
“While multiple myeloma is not yet fixable, it can be managed effectively with a range of medical therapies, and today can be treated as a chronic disease,” said Dr. Harrison. “Many people live successfully with chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and asthma. This is my chronic disease.”
Dr. Harrison has been president and CEO of Intermountain since October 2016. He earned an undergraduate degree at Haverford College and a medical degree at Dartmouth Medical School. He completed a residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pediatric critical care through the University of Utah School of Medicine, working at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital. He has had a distinguished career in pediatric critical care and as a health system physician leader including serving as the CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.
