Measure Your Fitness And Find Your Training Zones

As you advance in your training it is important to periodically monitor your body’s fitness level.  Determining an athlete’s lactate threshold is one of the best methods for monitoring fitness changes due to training.

A lactate threshold test helps you:

  • Estimate your fitness level
  • Establish your training zone
  • Adjust your training schedule
  • Train your body to clear lactate more effectively
  • Improve your endurance and overall performance.

What Is Lactate Threshold?

Lactate, which is commonly referred to as lactic acid, builds up in the muscles during physical activity. Your body produces lactic acid naturally to help provide your body with energy. However, when your body is producing too much lactic acid for your muscles to process, fatigue can set in.

How Does Knowing Lactate Threshold Training Zones Help?

By using training methods that are focused around your specific lactate threshold training zones, you can train your body to eliminate or clear lactate from your body more effectively. Clearing or eliminating lactic acid from your muscles makes it possible to increase the intensity and length of your workouts, improving your overall endurance.

How Does A Lactate Threshold Test Work?

A lactate threshold test is performed by taking a small sample of blood at various stages of a work out.  At the Live Well Center we take this sample from your ear as you run on a treadmill or ride a stationary bike.  We measure the lactate levels in your blood and compare them to your heart rate and power output.  This information helps us develop a training plan for you to increase your fitness level.
