What is your Lactate Threshold?

This is where we test for the point in which blood lactate builds up faster than your body can remove it during exercise. Knowing your lactate threshold helps our experts figure out the best exercise prescription for you.

What can I expect during a Lactate Threshold test?

  • This is a 90-minute appointment.
  • This is a graded exercise test completed on a treadmill or a bicycle with exercise intensity increasing gradually, usually in 3-minute intervals.
  • We will take blood samples from either the finger or the earlobe at the end of each stage, simultaneously recording heart rate, wattage, and pacing data.
  • The test will continue until blood lactate levels indicate we have reached your threshold, usually within 12-20 minutes.
  • An exercise physiologist will explain your results once you are done with the test.
