The Broken Arch Loop is a great family-friendly loop hike to two beautiful arches in the heart of Arches National Park. In addition to the arches along the trail, the hike passes through interesting sandstone fins and towers that are sure to impress. This hike is suitable for most healthy adults and children.
The Broken Arch Loop hike begins at the Sand Dune Arch parking area on Arches Scenic Drive (38.764752,-109.583393).
Reaching the trailhead from Moab, Utah:
- Drive north on Highway 191 for approximately 4.0 miles to the entrance of Arches National Park.
- Turn right onto Arches Scenic Drive and drive 16 miles to signed Sand Dune Arch parking area on the right side of the road.
There is a $25 per vehicle fee to enter Arches National Park.
NOTE: It is also possible to complete the loop from within Devil’s Garden Campground. The trail begins near the restroom at the south end of the campground and returns near site #51 at the end of the campground road, about 200 yards south of where the trail begins.
From the Sand Dune Arch Parking area, begin hiking on the trail heading northeast. After about 100 yards, a junction on the right leads to Sand Dune Arch. The arch is not far off the trail and is worth a quick visit if you have the time. Kids will love playing in the deep sand below the arch.
Beyond the junction to Sand Dune Arch, the trail meanders through a wide, open field toward Broken Arch, which is visible in the distance. After about 0.4 miles, the trail reaches a signed junction, which is the beginning of the loop portion of the hike (38.76962,-109.580742). Turn right toward Broken Arch.
Once on the loop trail, it’s just a quarter mile to Broken Arch. Despite the name, the arch is very much intact. Although not as grand as some of the larger arches in the park, it is still quite beautiful and offers fantastic views of the surrounding landscape.
From Broken Arch, climb through the arch and continue hiking on the trail as it heads northwest past beautiful sandstone cliffs and towers. Soon the trail enters another open field. Near the far side, a short trail leads to Tapestry Arch (38.777272,-109.583479). The spur trail to Tapestry Arch is about 300 yards long and well worth the visit.
A few hundred yards beyond the Tapestry Arch junction, the trail enters Devil’s Garden Campground (38.774378,-109.586845). Turn left onto the campground road and walk about 200 yards to where the trail resumes near campsite #51 (38.77319,-109.585993). Good signage is present sending hikers in the right direction.
Once back on the trail, continue hiking south as the trail climbs into the surrounding rock formations, passing through some interesting fins and narrow passageways before arriving back at the junction to the Sand Dune Arch parking area.
Total hiking distance including a side trip to Tapestry Arch is approximately 3 miles round trip. For hikers beginning and ending from within the campground, the total loop distance is 2.2 miles.
