Volunteering

Volunteer at Lutheran Hospital

Our volunteers have one thing in common: a dedication to service. As a Lutheran Hospital volunteer, you will be an extension of our healthcare team, sharing your time and talents throughout our facility. You will make a difference in the lives of our patients and family members. In 2023, our volunteers gave over 25,000 hours (about 3 years) of service to Lutheran Hospital and other Intermountain Health care sites. Plus, through fundraising, they donate more than $150,000 annually to support the hospital.

Benefits of volunteering

Why volunteer?

  • Make a difference to others and to yourself.
  • Meet generous, friendly like-minded people while serving a collective purpose.
  • Give back to your community through service to others.
  • Develop professional skills and gain valuable healthcare experience that can help you when applying for jobs, scholarships, and college programs.
  • Gain a better view of the relationship between the patient, healthcare providers and the community.

Before becoming a Lutheran Hospital Volunteer

Before you can put on that volunteer vest and proudly wear that volunteer badge, there are a few steps you will need to take, including:

  • An interview with a volunteer services leader
  • A background check
  • Proof of vaccinations
  • Possibly a tuberculosis test, flu shot and other requirements to serve in a healthcare setting
  • Orientation Training

Things to consider

Typically, volunteers serve an average of four hours per week. As a volunteer, you can grow, learn, make new friends, exchange ideas, and contribute to your community. Volunteers have access to free secure parking and a free meal in the café during your shift. We do require a minimum of a 1-year commitment but hope you will love volunteering so much you will not want to leave! Additionally, you must be at least 14 years old to volunteer.

Ready to learn more or apply?

  • If you are at least 14 years old or older, complete and submit the appropriate online application. Please note: if you are 14-18 years old, please select the Junior Application.
  • Once we have received your application, we will schedule an interview to get to know you better. During the interview, we will discuss your skills and interests to determine an appropriate department and position for you. Upon successful completion of a background check and TB screening, new volunteers attend an orientation and begin training.

We have a wide variety of different volunteer assignments and strive to find a position that is a perfect fit for each volunteer accepted into the program.

Some positions in departments such as the Emergency Department and Care Assistants are patient focused. We also have volunteers who visit patients with therapy dogs or comfort carts allowing them the opportunity for patient interaction.

Other volunteers work in staff-support roles in various hospital departments and offices performing clerical and other support tasks.

We also have volunteers who work with hospital guests and visitors. They assist in raising funds in the Gift Shop, give directions and assistance at the welcome desk, and provide information to guests in the surgery waiting room.

The interview portion of the application process gives us the chance to get to know you, your availability, your interests, and your skills, and then we match these things with our open assignments. Again, we will do our best to place you in an exciting and worthwhile position.

We want you to enjoy volunteering! We hope to find a position you like right from the start. However, if other opportunities arise, your schedule changes, or you want to try something new, changes can be made.
