What is the 100-day Heart Challenge?
A 100-day competition sponsored by Utah Valley Regional Medical Center to see which “couple” in Utah County can make the most improvement in their heart health. The “couples” are consulted by highly skilled heart physicians at the onset of the contest, then throughout the 100-day challenge. A number of tests – including cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose, body fat and weight - are performed at the beginning and conclusion of the challenge to gauge the success and improvement of participants. The “couple” showing the greatest improvement wins the Challenge.
*Participants for the 2010 challenge have already been selected. Stay tuned for more information on how to follow their progress.
Who can join?
Any Utah County woman age 30 and above who is not an employee of Intermountain Healthcare* and who wants to improve the health of her heart can apply to participate in the event. Ten women will be selected to participate and then those 10 women will select a partner who will also participate in the Challenge. Partners may be male or female, but must be at least 30 years old.
*Intermountain Healthcare employees are not eligible to participate in this 100-day Heart Challenge. A separate Challenge for Intermountain employees will take place later in 2010 and will follow the same criteria as this public Challenge.
What do the ‘couples’ have to do?
Commit to doing everything they can to improve their heart health and be examples to others in doing the same thing! The entire 100-day Heart Challenge will be chronicled by various local media including The Daily Herald so other Utah County residents can follow along and make similar improvements in their own heart health. In addition, participants are asked to blog about their experience so others can observe their successes and challenges to becoming more heart-healthy. Each participant must also commit to attending the weekly nutrition class and all training sessions.
What do the ‘couples’ receive?
The “couples” each receive all screenings, gym memberships, training sessions and a weekly nutrition class – all for FREE. The “couple” who makes the most improvements in all the factors that contribute to heart health wins the competition and will receive some great prizes.
How can you apply to participate?
