Life Flight

Life Flight offers several specialty teams for patients requiring care beyond Advanced Life Support.

The Adult Team consists of highly skilled nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists and physicians experienced in the care and treatment of critically ill and injured patients. Our adult team works on scene flights, search and rescue missions, and interfacility transports. The adult team also has the capability of transporting patients already relying on an Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump for cardiac support. These nurses have experience in cardiac and thoracic intensive care.

The Pediatric Team is the only air ambulance service in the Intermountain area with nurses trained and experienced in the care and treatment of critically ill and injured children. They have worked for a minimum of five years in either the Emergency Department and/or Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Primary Children's Medical Center. Our Pediatric team is the only team of its kind in the United States that responds to "out-of-hospital" requests by local Emergency Medical Services in the field.

The Neonatal Team is the only air ambulance service in the Intermountain area with nurses and respiratory therapists trained to care for infants less than 30 days old and all pre-term infants during transport. They have worked a minimum of five years in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (Level III nurseries). We also offer both high-frequency "jet" ventilation and Nitric Oxide (NO) administration during transport. Our Neonatal team is also the only team of its kind in the United States that responds to "out-of-hospital" requests by local Emergency Medical Services in the field.

The Respiratory Therapy Team has respiratory therapists available on-call 24/7 to respond with our regular teams for patients with special respiratory needs. We have adult, pediatric, and neonatal therapists available. We also have several different types of ventilators to choose from depending on the patient's needs and can bring a liquid oxygen supplied ventilator for adults if needed or nitric oxide for newborns.

The Utah Artificial Heart Service Team, in partnership with LDS Hospital's Artificial Heart Program, can transport patients on an LVAD (left ventricular assist device). A nurse or perfusionist from the Artificial Heart Program will accompany Life Flight's transport team on the flight.

The External Rescue Hoist Team is the only civilian operated air ambulance service in the United States to operate such a program. Our adult rotor-wing nurses, paramedics, and helicopter pilots go through extensive quarterly training to maintain rigorous FAA guidelines to rescue victims in "hard to reach" environments and extract them to a safe landing area. This service not only saves lives by cutting down the ground time for the patient's care, but also saves local search and rescue teams hundreds of man-hours by flying directly to the patient in just a few minutes. Search and rescue time is donated by Life Flight; patients are not charged until being transported to a hospital.
