Basic Aseptic Technique

This course is offered to staff who will be scrubbing in on cases in the operating room. It teaches principles of asepsis to help staff navigate around a sterile field. Staff learn and practice how to open a sterile field, open sterile supplies, perform a surgical hand scrub, and don a surgical gown and sterile gloves.

Crisis Resource Management

Crisis resource management principles form the foundation for efficient team functioning and subsequent error reduction in high stakes environments. This type of simulation is most commonly integrated into other simulation activities we offer and has the potential for a tremendous impact on patient safety and outcomes.

iCentra

iCentra is utilizing Simulation in the training and sustaining of a new EMR within Intermountain Healthcare. Participants are run through three scenarios in a realistic patient care setting, including admission, status change, and discharge.

Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

The Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) has been designed to teach an evidence-based approach to resuscitation of the newborn to hospital staff who care for newborns at the time of delivery, including physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists. NRP simulation uses the TeamSTEPPS framework to optimize team performance across the healthcare delivery system using four teachable-learnable skills: Communication, Leadership, Situation Monitoring, and Mutual Support.

Nurse Residency

Intermountain’s year-long nurse residency program incorporates 3 days of simulation scenarios, allowing continuation of a style of learning introduced in nursing school and designed to build confidence, leadership skills, and safe transition into practice.

Nursing Unit Orientation

This course will take new hires through three simulation scenarios comprised of selected core competencies required in each clinical program. Simulation will provide a unique way to assure nurses are introduced to key elements of their nursing units that they may not otherwise get during their clinical training on the unit.

OREO

This 10-week course is offered to UCR RNs who are orienting as OR Circulators. The course complements the RN Residency Class and covers resources and skill pass-offs from the Nursing Unit Orientation (NUO) Operation Room curricula.

Physician Task Training

This type of simulation allows clinicians to practice specific procedures on a manikin. At Primary Children’s, this type of simulation is used to train residents in intraosseous needle placement, lumbar puncture, central lines, bag mask valve, needle decompression, and difficult airway intubation.

Root Cause Analysis

This course is designed to improve communication and facilitation using simulation principles as they apply to debriefing a Root Cause Analysis. During this intense one day course, participants are given opportunities to practice prebrief, debrief, and action planning skills using simulation facilitation philosophies.

Shoulder Dystocia

Shoulder dystocia is a rare obstetric emergency that requires immediate recognition and a well-coordinated team response. Simulation-based training has been shown to improve team coordination and effective management of this emergency.

Telecritical Care

This one-day training course incorporates simulated activities to learn and practice leadership and communication principles to enhance the delivery of care between the bedside and Tele-healthcare team. Nurses and physicians caring for our patients at the bedside have a frame of reference of what is happening with their patient and why they have made certain decisions with their care. This course teaches Crisis Resource Management and principles of advocacy and inquiry to work towards team intelligence. These principles when put into action help tele-health staff to provide role clarity, communicate effectively, and expand their thinking to include input of other people who have valuable information that can be used to improve decision making and ultimately promote patient safety and engagement.

Workplace Violence

Workplace Violence Simulation is a 3 hour training that focus’ on de-escalation of both employees, patients, and visitors. It is an Intermountain Healthcare created program that replaces and MANDT.

Miscelaneous Courses

Every region conducts simulation activities by request that do not fall into any of the above categories.
