Tips for Understanding the Health of Your Newborn

Babies cry…a lot

In the beginning, newborns cry a lot. Sometimes it feels like you’re playing a guessing game with understanding what they want. As long as you’re answering the cry of your newborn, things are going to be okay. Babies really thrive from being nurtured. So, never think you can love on your baby too much.

You are your baby’s lifeline

It has always amazed me at how much babies depend on us to survive. Whether breastfeeding or formula feeding, the baby is looking to you. The more time you spend with your baby, the more you understand about her and how she works.

Ask your doctor lots of questions

When my oldest was born, I always felt bad about asking the doctor questions. Now that my kids are older, I don’t feel bad about asking them questions, I embrace it. The health of my baby depends on me understanding everything about her. I also take advantage of the nurse hotline available with my doctor’s office.

The 3 S’s

Something I learned early on about soothing babies are the 3 S’s. The three s’s include swaddling, shushing, and swinging. Doing one or all three of these things can help baby rest and go to sleep. This is something you will want to grasp early on if you have a colicky baby.

Try to understand your specific baby

Everyone looks to the Internet to find answers for their baby. One thing I did was get to know my baby. If something didn’t look right (too high of a fever, unusual rash, etc.) I got help immediately. You need to get to understand and know your baby, this will help you understand the health of your newborn even more.

Getting to understand the health of your baby comes down to asking questions and getting answers. Don’t be shy! Also, get to know your baby as you will be their lifeline and the one that helps seek the healthcare they will need.
