Halloween is an exciting time of year for kids. To help ensure their safety here are some tips to keep in mind.

All Dressed Up:
- Costumes should be bright and reflective. Make sure costumes do not drag on the ground to prevent tripping.
- Consider adding reflective tape to trick or treat bags for greater visibility.
- Masks can limit eyesight: consider non-toxic makeup instead.
- Look for flame resistant materials when shopping for costumes.
- If a sword, cane or stick is part of a child’s costume, make sure it is not too sharp or long.
- Stock up on batteries for flashlights.
- Teach children how to call 911 if they will be trick or treating without an adult, and send them out with a cellphone.
- Keep the walkway to your front door clear of obstacles to prevent any tripping.
- Replace any outdoor light bulbs if burned out.
- Restrain pets so they are not jumping on or biting trick or treaters.
- Parents should accompany young kids on their route. If older kids (at least Jr. High aged) are going alone, review the route they are planning and have them check in periodically via text or phone.
- Always use a sidewalk!
- Never cut across alleys or yards.
- Use crosswalks and watch for traffic, as cars may not see you!
- Offering a good meal before heading out to trick or treat is a good idea, as well as providing some healthy snacks to be eaten throughout the evening.
- Consider giving out non-food items to trick or treaters.
- Wait until children are home to sort and check treats. Though tampering is rare, a responsible adult should closely examine all treats and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items.
- Encourage kids to sort their candy and ration or place into small zip lock bags. Then candy can be enjoyed on future outings with the family!
