Choosing a pediatrician can be one of the most important decisions for a young parent. Babies need to see their pediatrician roughly every 2-3 months so you want to make sure your pediatrician is a good fit for your family.

"I do a lot of 'meet and greets' with parents-to-be. I mostly go over my style and my role," says Jeffrey Richker, MD, of SCL Health Medical Group - Lafayette. "There are many hot topics in pediatrics: antibiotics, immunizations, diet, supplements and now COVID-19. I don't think it matters as much if both the physician and the parents agree on these issues. I believe what's truly important is if the parents feel they can talk to their pediatrician and be heard.

"Is this someone that will be there for them? Also, what's their access to their provider? What if their provider is not available? Parents need to ask themselves if this provider and this office is a good fit for them. I'll always suggest parents interview more than one provider. That way, when they make their choice, it will most likely be a good and informed decision."
