Your Guide To Postpartum Care For New Moms
Learn more about SCL Health's Pregnancy and Baby Services.
The postpartum period refers to the first six weeks after childbirth, where mom and baby form strong bonds. This time is chock-full of new experiences and emotions.
Katie Rustici, MD, board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology at SCL Health Medical Group - Central Park OB-Gyn, answered common questions from expecting mothers in Part 1 and Part 2 of our video series.
But now that the baby has arrived, now what?
A postpartum guide can help everyone adjust to post-pregnancy life with a newborn.
Get plenty of rest
Your baby may wake up to feed every few hours, but your body is still healing and needs sleep.
Seek help
Raising a family is not a solo endeavor. Don't hesitate to ask for help.
Eat healthy
Add more whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and water to your diet.
Exercise
Take a walk nearby or get a change of scenery. Consult your doctor about exercise and avoid anything strenuous.
Expect changes to your body
Your postpartum body has been through a lot and is still healing. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns about body changes during this time.
Set aside time to communicate
A newborn can be a huge adjustment and cause partners or other family members to feel left out. It's essential to communicate and set aside time for loved ones.
Baby Blues
Up to 80% of new mothers experience mood swings or intense emotions caused by hormonal changes.
Symptoms may include:
- Unexplained crying
- Instability
- Insomnia
- Sadness
- Mood changes
- Restlessness
Postpartum Depression
Unlike the baby blues, symptoms of postpartum depression will last longer than two weeks and require medical treatment.
Symptoms often include:
- Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
