About our program

The Intermountain Utah Valley Sports Medicine Fellowship provides the training needed to thrive as a physician and leader in sports medicine. Our fellows learn as they work side-by-side with nationally recognized, expert faculty, receiving the latest instruction in the diagnosis and management of sports-related injuries and medical conditions, ultrasound-guided procedures, regenerative medicine, concussion management and leadership. Fellows also benefit from strong team physician experiences across three Division I Universities and regular coverage at the Park City Mountain Resort Ski Clinic.

  • Strong clinical and academic experience, including high-volume sports medicine and concussion clinics, extensive MSK Ultrasound training, national conferences, a diverse sports medicine faculty team dedicated to fellow success and an excellent selection of visiting instructors.

  • Individualized curriculum, with one-quarter of rotational time customized to fellow goals and interests.

Everything you need to know about our fellowship program and what to expect

Our multifaceted curriculum balances longitudinal and rotational experiences to offer the latest instruction in the diagnosis and management of sports-related injuries and medical conditions, ultrasound-guided procedures, regenerative medicine, concussion management and leadership. Diverse sports medicine and orthopedic faculty provide training across a variety of domains to ensure a strong fellowship education.

Clinical Experience

  • High-volume Primary Care Sports Medicine & Concussion Clinic staffed by both fellowship-trained neuropsychologists and sports medicine physicians.
  • A variety of rotational experiences including:
    • Primary Care Sports Medicine
    • Primary Specialty Continuity
    • MSK Ultrasound
    • MSK Radiology
    • Ortho: Sports
    • Ortho: Hand & Wrist
    • Ortho: Foot & Ankle
    • Concussion Management
    • Nutrition, Ski Trauma
    • Physical Therapy
    • Performance Medicine (optional)
    • A variety of electives
  • Most rotations located within 6 miles of the primary clinic.
  • Individualized Education - One quarter of the fellowship year rotations are customized based on fellow interests and goals. Elective experiences are available through the Intermountain Healthcare network across Idaho, Utah, Colorado & Nevada

MSK Ultrasound Training

Advanced Diagnostic MSK Ultrasound training is a core component of fellowship training. Our fellows experience:

  • Thorough didactic & hands-on diagnostic MSK ultrasound & ultrasound-guided procedure training
  • Intermountain-hosted ultrasound-guided procedure cadaver training under nationally-recognized visiting instructors
  • Advanced MSK Ultrasound Conference session
  • Daily clinical use
  • Wireless ultrasound probes checked out to the fellows on the first day of fellowship to accompany them at all clinical experiences and allow for additional offsite practice

Team Physician & Events

  • Extensive Team Physician and Training Room coverage spanning three NCAA Division I Universities
    • Brigham Young University
    • Utah Valley University
    • Utah State University
  • Fellows have both mentored team physician and independent DI head team physician experiences, enabling them to build strong relationships with coaches, trainers and athletes and to take ownership of the medical care of their teams.
  • Mass Participation Event Coverage
    • Endurance Medicine experience as medical directors for St. George Ironman or Ironman Championship
    • UHSAA High School Wrestling Championship
  • Additional team and sporting event coverage ranging from high school to professional

Ski Trauma

The Ski Trauma rotation is a highlight of every fellowship class. Fellows train one day per week for three months on-mountain at the Park City Mountain Resort Ski Clinic. The acute nature of ski clinic injuries makes this a vital component of fellowship training.

Academic Activities

  • National conference presentation at expense paid conference(s)
  • Weekly Didactics, quarterly Journal Clubs & four nationally-recognized visiting instructors per year
  • Regular Director Mentorship & Instructional Time

Leadership Curriculum

  • Designed and taught in partnership with BYU’s Marriott School of Business Faculty
  • Monthly longitudinal lectures and leadership readings
  • Access to Marriott School of Business’ acclaimed leadership faculty
  • Capstone experience: Creating a leadership plan for your first 6 months of independent practice
    • Work 1:1 with an acclaimed executive coaching team from the Marriott School of Business
    • Follow up touchpoint for 9 months post-graduation to adjust and accomplish plan
    • Active mentoring by sports medicine faculty and Marriott School faculty to ensure a successful start to practice.

The sports medicine fellowship program hosts a limited number of resident rotation experiences each year. Please apply below or reach out to the fellowship coordinator if you are interested in being considered for an audition rotation. We are not hosting medical student rotations at this time. 

  • Participants can expect to receive education and exposure to the following:

    • Outpatient injury care 
    • Primary care for the athletic population 
    • Casting and splinting 
    • Local injections 
    • Reading musculoskeletal radiographs 
    • Musculoskeletal ultrasound
