The fetal heart program at Intermountain Children's Health is here to provide the best outcomes possible for you and your child with arrhythmias and congenital heart disease during pregnancy. That way, right from the start, we help your baby get the best care possible.

We specialize in identifying heart defects and treating heart problems in babies before they are born. We provide care for you and your child by working with prenatal planning, education, and management after delivery. Together, we can help you learn about your baby's condition and make plans for their care. After the baby is born, our doctors can quickly start any treatments your baby needs.

What to expect

Learn how our fetal heart program at Intermountain Children's Health can help you.

A fetal echocardiogram (echo) is a noninvasive ultrasound, like a regular obstetric ultrasound. However, the echo focuses only on the detailed structure, function, and heart rhythm of your unborn baby's heart.

There are a several reasons you might be referred for a fetal echo. Some circumstances may include:

  • Maternal conditions such as diabetes, autoimmune disease, or exposure to certain medications
  • Diagnosis of another birth concern or syndrome in your fetus
  • Twin or other multiple pregnancies
  • An abnormal fetal heart rate
  • Family history of congenital heart disease
  • If the fetus's heart was not well seen or screening views appeared abnormal during a routine obstetric ultrasound

During your initial visit you will receive:

  • A fetal echocardiogram which will take approximately one hour.
  • A consultation with one of our fetal cardiologists, which allows the physician to explain the fetal echocardiogram results and gives time for questions you may have.
  • Coordination of resources and education from one of our fetal heart nurse coordinators.
  • Scheduling of consultations with other services as needed. This may include maternal-fetal medicine, social services, genetics, and the Utah Fetal Center.

If a heart problem is identified on the fetal echocardiogram during your visit, our team will work with you and your OB/GYN to plan the best care for your baby.

Know that you are not alone, we are your partners in care. During this stress and uncertainty, we are here to provide the best possible care for you and your child.
