What Sets Us Apart

Garfield Memorial Hospital is a 15 bed, Critical Access hospital located in Panguitch, Utah, with an adjoining Long Term Care facility. We were recently named a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital, an award given to hospitals who scored the highest in the nation in areas like quality, cost and patient experience. Our caregivers provide superior care, ensuring our patients and their loved ones feel truly supported, safe, at ease, and cared for at the highest level, throughout our rural southern Utah service area.

Our History

1975

The Garfield Memorial Hospital was built by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint (LDS Church) starting in 1975 with a combination of fundraisers, direct donations, private donations, and government grants. However, before it was completed in 1976, the LDS Church divested itself of its hospitals and turned over operations to a newly formed nonprofit organization, Intermountain Healthcare, which at the time was known as Intermountain Health Care [IHC]. IHC assumed the operations of fifteen hospitals in Utah, Southeastern Idaho, and Southwestern Wyoming, including Garfield Memorial Hospital.

However, even though the hospital was operated by IHC, it was actually owned by Garfield County for its first decade. Notwithstanding, IHC obtained ownership for the second decade of operation before it reverted to back to Garfield County in the year 2000. Despite the changes in ownership, it has been continually operated by Intermountain Healthcare. In 1996 an additional wing was added to the hospital.

The quality of care Garfield Memorial Hospital provides rural southern Utah is second to none. Expansion of services, as well as addition of a mobile mammography unit and mobile clinic and pharmacy helps to provide essential resources to the outlying, rural communities of central and southern Utah, and enables these communities to have access to high quality medical care, close to home. The success of this rural clinic network continues to serve as a model for all of Intermountain Healthcare.
