Scheduling Your Procedure
All scheduling is done through your GI Physician’s
office. The McKay-Dee admitting office will call you the
day prior to your procedure to pre-register you.
Taking Prescribed Medication
Many of our procedures require you to be NPO (no
food or drink). If you are taking Heart or Blood Pressure
medication, take these the morning of your procedure
with just a small sip of water.
Before Your Procedure
Your GI Physician’s office will provide you with
instruction on preparing for your procedure.
NOT FOLLOWING THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY
REQUIRE YOUR PROCEDURE TO BE RE-SCHEDULED.
Be aware of any changes in your physical condition, such
as a sore throat, cold or fever, prior to your procedure.
Consult your physician if you experience any changes.
Preparing for Your Procedure
Colonoscopy
No matter what method of preparation you are given
by your physician, the goal is the same—to clean out
the bowel so the bowel walls can be clearly visualized
through the scope. Please drink all of the prep fliud
you are given. When the waste is clear and yellow,
you are prepared for your colonoscopy. If you have any
problems, your physician should be contacted.
EGD, ERCP, Esophageal Motility, and pH Testing
No food or drink after midnight before your exam (NPO).
Registering at the Gl Clinic
Please bring with you:
- Your insurance card
- A current list of all medications
- No small children, please
- The completed history and physical form found in this
packet (or you may fill it out online if you have been
preregistered).
- If under 18 years of age, a parent or guardian to sign
the consent and speak with the physician.
- A responsible person to stay during your procedure and
drive you home if you are having a colonoscopy, EGD, or
ERCP. These procedures require IV medication to keep
you comfortable and you will be restricted from driving
for 12 hours.
Your Procedure
- When you check in at the Endoscopy Lab window, you
will confirm that billing information is correct.
- If having a colonoscopy, EGD, or ERCP you will be called
back to an admitting room where you will be asked to
change into a hospital gown. A nurse will review your
history and explain the procedure to you at this time.
- You will then go to the procedure room where the
physician will discuss the procedure with you prior to
beginning, and you will sign a consent form.
Family members will be asked to wait in the waiting room.
Generally, the procedure takes 20 to 40 minutes. Those
under 18 years of age should be accompanied by their
parent or guardian until the procedure begins.
Your Recovery
You will spend at least 30 minutes in recovery after the
procedure. The person driving you home may be with you
in recovery, where the physician will follow up with you.
Though a colonoscopy is not a perfect procedure, it is by
far the most thorough examination possible.
It is possible to miss something on any endoscopic
procedure. Therefore, if symptoms persist, please follow
up with your doctor for management options.
Procedure Fees
McKay-Dee Hospital issues one bill that includes charges
for basic lab tests, procedure fees, and all other services
provided during your stay. This does not include fees for
your physician or pathologist. These services will be billed
separately, if applicable to your procedure.
