Intestinal Adaptation Clinic (IntAC)

The Intestinal Adaptation Clinic (known as IntAC) is a multidisciplinary care medical and nutrition clinic designed for patients with intestinal insufficiency to achieve optimal independence from enteral and parenteral nutrition support.

Our Model

This clinic, housed under the Feeding and Swallowing Center at Primary Children’s Hospital, offers care for patients with the inability to absorb all the nutrients they need from their gastrointestinal tract and who may require intravenous (IV or parental) nutrition support as well as feeding tubes and specialized enteral nutrition. Our center brings a team of pediatric gastroenterologists, a focused pediatric dietitian, specialized nursing, a nurse practitioner and social worker to help navigate the complex medical system these patients require. The team of specialists have expertise in IV nutrition support, formula or tube feeding support, medications available to help growth and intestinal tolerance, as well as collaboration with our pediatric surgeons, radiologists, infectious disease and pharmacists who are necessary for comprehensive care of your child.

We work closely with home health providers and outside pharmacies in the intermountain region to ensure seamless delivery of additional calories given through an IV or feeding tubes, if needed.

Conditions We Treat

  • Necrotizing enterocolitis
  • Intestinal atresia or congenital anomalies
  • Complex gastroschisis
  • Short bowel syndrome
  • Intestinal failure or malnutrition from inflammatory conditions or surgeries

Referrals

Patients with conditions that qualify for intestinal insufficiency can be referred directly by an outside care provider or inpatient team, often after a surgery or hospital stay.
