Your Baby

As you begin the second trimester of pregnancy, your baby continues to grow rapidly. Body size starts to catch up to the size of the head. Overall length is 2.5 to 3 inches — slightly longer than a tube of Chapstick.

Your baby can flex his arms and legs—and on the end of each finger, ridges in the skin form the beginning of your baby's unique fingerprints.

Your Body

Heartburn (reflux or acid indigestion) is common in pregnant women. It's a burning or stinging sensation in your lower throat and upper chest. It can be slightly uncomfortable — or fairly painful.

Why heartburn now? Hormones produced by the placenta tend to relax the valve at the top of your stomach. The acidic digestive fluid can more easily back up (reflux) into your esophagus — especially when you're lying down.

Healthy Tip

To combat heartburn, try these tips:

  • Wait at least 3 hours after eating before going to bed.
  • Raise the head of the bed 4 to 6 inches.
  • Wear looser clothing and bras.
  • Eat smaller meals.

Talk to your healthcare provider if your heartburn is ongoing or severe.
