St. Vincent Regional Hospital begins construction on 'Once-in-a-Generation' hospital

Discover how this historic investment will serve future generations

On June 17, Intermountain Health hosted a groundbreaking event to celebrate the start of construction of the new St. Vincent Regional Hospital, a “once in a generation” investment in the health of the Billings, Montana community.

The new hospital will be a 14-floor, 737,000 square-foot facility located at 27th Street and 12th Avenue North just east of the current hospital building. This will be a full-replacement hospital, meaning the current St. Vincent facility will be replaced. Upon opening, all current services offered at St. Vincent will transfer to the new facility.

St. Vincent Hospital Groundbreaking

“St. Vincent has deep roots, from our humble beginning as Billings’ first hospital, founded by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth in 1898, to an innovative, nationally ranked hospital for safety and quality,” said Lee Boyles, president of the Montana Market and St. Vincent Regional Hospital.

"This milestone groundbreaking event is both a celebration and a promise,” said Rob Allen, president and CEO. “Intermountain honors the legacy built by St. Vincent Hospital caregivers and providers over the past 125 years, and we celebrate our mission-driven promise of health and healing for future generations of Montanans. I am so grateful for the incredible team of caregivers, doctors, and APPs serving patients and communities across Montana.”

The project is designed to address current needs of patients in the region, while accommodating both long-term population growth and future healthcare needs of the community.

In addition to serving healthcare needs, the hospital will contribute significantly to the local economy. At the high point in construction, it is anticipated that 600-700 workers will be on site at the project, and 1,200 total workers are expected to be involved in this project. This infusion of resources will support various sectors, including construction, healthcare services, and local businesses, leading to sustained economic growth and development in the region. This is in addition to Intermountain Health’s contribution of nearly $1 billion to the local economy each year.

"By attracting patients from surrounding areas and offering state-of-the-art medical services, the hospital will stimulate local businesses, from hospitality to retail, and contribute to the overall economic vitality of the region,” said Jim Sheets, Peaks Region president.

Construction of the new facility is expected to be completed in 2029.
