Revolutionary Gynecology: How Minimally Invasive Procedures Are Improving Recovery

Recovering from major surgery can be a lengthy, painful process. Now, minimally invasive gynecologic procedures at St. James Healthcare make it easier for patients to bounce back.

With robotic technology assistance, surgeons can perform many standard procedures using much smaller incisions, lowering the risk of complications, shortening hospital stays, and improving overall recovery.

“Most gynecologic surgeries are approached with a minimally invasive technique, including diagnostic laparoscopy, excision of endometriosis, ovarian cyst removal, and hysterectomy,” said Dr. Laura Twist, an OB/GYN at St. James.

    A minimally invasive hysterectomy?

When Kelli Fivey, of Butte, learned she’d need a hysterectomy, she steeled herself for a difficult surgery and a long recovery, having had a C-section and a spinal fusion in the past.

“I was surprised when I found out minimally invasive surgery was an option,” she recalled. “After the surgery, when Dr. Twist told me she could take care of the whole thing using the robot, including removing a fibroid that weighed a full pound, I was amazed.”

Fivey’s surgery took place in February 2022. She was out of bed within hours and went home from the hospital the next day. Within two weeks, she was already plotting a return to work.

“I felt pretty normal after a few days,” she said. “I was sore but never took anything stronger than acetaminophen or ibuprofen. I hate to use the word ‘easy,’ but my recovery was definitely manageable.”

    Robotic technology assists surgeons

Dr. Jacob Christian, St. James OB/GYN, credits the robotic technology for preventing patients from having to travel or go out of network to access this cutting-edge gynecologic care.

“Having robotic technology at St. James is a great resource and a great way to ensure patients can receive some of the best care in the state close to home,” he explained. “The technology heightens the surgeon's skill — the visualization is amazing, and the dexterity of the robot helps reduce stress on the patient due to improved stability of the instruments.”

Patients from southwestern Montana benefit from the minimally invasive technology at St. James Healthcare.

“For gynecologic surgeries, the robotic surgical approach is associated with better outcomes for complex pathology like large uteruses or extensive scar tissue,” Dr. Twist added. “The approach can be used on almost anyone and is highly recommended for obese patients.”

    Ask your doctor

In the meantime, Fivey encourages patients to talk to their doctors to find out if the minimally invasive approach is an option.

“The recovery between minimally invasive vs. invasive surgery is so markedly different,” she said. “For me, it was a much better experience.”
