Staying Safe in the Sun This Summer

Stay sun-safe this summer with essential tips on sunscreen use, shade, and protective clothing.

    Woman in the sun

Summer is here which means many of us will be enjoying the warm weather and sunshine.

While being out in the sun can be great for our vitamin D levels, we do need to make sure we're protecting ourselves from harmful UV rays.

Too much sun can increase your risk of skin cancer and skin damage.

Here are a few ways you can protect yourself from the sun:

    1. Use sunscreen: This can help prevent skin cancer as well as premature skin aging. Broad spectrum SPF sunscreen is recommended. This means that the sunscreen protects against UVA and UVB rays. Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater and apply liberally to the skin every 2 hours while outdoors. Don’t forget sensitive areas such as the ears, neck, and the tops of your feet. It’s best to apply the sunscreen about 15 minutes before going outside.
    2. Sit in a shaded spot: Do this whenever possible while outdoors. The sun is strongest between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., so this would be the best time to find a shady spot to rest.
    3. Wear sun-protective clothing: Wearing a lightweight long-sleeved shirt or pants, a hat with a brim, and sunglasses can help protect you from the sun. Remember that surfaces such as water, snow, and sand can reflect the sun’s rays and increase your risk for getting sunburned.
