Our one-year Transitional Year program is designed for residents who desire broad clinical experience to prepare them for a career in a specialty field like anesthesiology, radiology, radiation oncology, dermatology, and PM&R.
Our residents rotate with internal medicine, ED, ambulatory clinic, general surgery, critical care and have ample elective time to prepare them for their future as specialists.

The medical campus boasts the state’s busiest Emergency Department, with over 80,000 patient visits per year, multiple specialty intensive-care units, and a full complement of ambulatory clinics.

The Transitional Year Residency has sponsor affiliation with the internal medicine and surgery residencies at the University of Utah School of Medicine.In addition to four to five months of elective/selective time, the year consists of rotations in community health, internal medicine, surgery, intensive care, emergency medicine, and ambulatory medicine.
Everything you need to know about our residency program and what to expect
The academic year consists of thirteen four-week rotation blocks. The first block starts on June 24 and the last block ends on June 23. Each rotation block is broken into A and B components, with most rotations occurring in two-week intervals. Transitional Year interns participate in resident education with the categorical residents in each rotation. Upper-level residents are University of Utah residents from each respective department (surgery, internal medicine, emergency medicine, etc.).
Transitional Year Residency participates in the National Residency Matching Program for first-year residency positions.
We are excited to be a part of the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) (AAMC ID Number 10328976) and will only accept applications for a residency position through the ERAS program.

The Transitional Year program will conduct interviews virtually. The dates will be sent with the ERAS invitation to the candidates selected for the interview. Additional limited interview dates may be available in certain circumstances.
