PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency

PGY2 residents train throughout six specialized intensive care units providing evidence-based care to critically ill patients while working alongside medical practitioners with advanced clinical skills.

About our program

The PGY2 critical care residency at Intermountain Medical Center provides training in six intensive care units, which house eight specialized critical care services. The focus of our program is to develop residents into highly skilled pharmacists, fully integrated within the interdisciplinary critical care team.

Our residency facilitates clinical and professional growth and emphasizes evidence-based medicine and the ability to critically assess and manage complex patients in a variety of fast-paced intensive care settings. Residents will also have numerous opportunities to develop teaching, precepting and presentation styles through Intermountain Health’s affiliation with local pharmacy schools.

Graduates of this residency program will possess the skills necessary to be highly competitive for career opportunities in any intensive care unit setting.

Everything you need to know about our program and what to expect.

Our PGY2 program offers rotations in a variety of intensive care settings to equip residents with clinical and professional skills necessary to perform confidently as a critical care pharmacist.

Rotations

  • Graduate from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy
  • Successful completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency
  • Obtain Utah pharmacist licensure within the first 90 days

  • Expected to obtain Utah pharmacist licensure within the first 90 days of the residency program
  • Attain "achieved" on at least 80% of all objectives (including 100% of the objectives in competency areas surrounding patient care)
  • Completion of two formal continuing education presentations
  • Completion of a research project
  • Obtain ACLS and PALS certification
  • Precept learners on rotation and teach at local colleges of pharmacy
  • Interact with and teach medical residents and advanced practice clinicians
  • Travel opportunities to local and national conferences

Residents staff every other weekend (32 hours per month) in the Shock Trauma ICU.

  • All application information must be received prior to 10pm MST on January 2nd, 2025.

  • Current curriculum vitae
  • Letter of intent addressing why you wish to complete a PGY2 Critical Care pharmacy residency at Intermountain Healthcare
  • Three letters of recommendation

Candidates selected to the pharmacy residency program are paid a competitive resident salary and receive a complete benefits package.

Resident Salary

  • Approximate PGY2 stipend: $76,000 per year

Pharmacy Resident Benefits

  • Classified as full-time employees of Intermountain Health
  • Paid a competitive resident salary
  • Eligible to receive a complete benefits package including retirement, health, dental, vision and life insurance
  • PTO is accrued at the rate according to hospital policy (currently approximately 25 days per year). This rate is subject to adjustment. The resident should generally expect to use ≤ 17 days of PTO (plus 8 paid holidays) during the residency year and may not use more than 25 days
  • Access to other employee benefits such as the employee wellness program, Employee Assistance Program (EAP) support, and the employee discount program.

Professional Development

  • Residents attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and an appropriate regional residency conference as determined by the individual sites.
  • PGY2 residents are also generally permitted to attend an applicable specialty conference.
  • In addition, internal CE and other professional development opportunities are offered on a regular basis.
