Jackie Thompson, PhD, winner of Salt Lake City’s NAACP’s Albert Fritz award, talked about REACH (Respecting Ethnic and Cultural Bridges) in her keynote address. REACH is based on five principles that foster inclusion in the workplace.

  1. Multiple perspectives
  2. Culture is something everyone has
  3. Building cultural bridges
  4. Head, Heart, Hands for Healing
  5. Co-responsibilities

“It’s not just about looking at someone’s skin surface, it’s looking at their deep culture, their ‘culture bag,’ and respecting them and valuing them,” said Dr. Thompson.
“In 2002, Utah became a hub for diversity and inclusion by hosting the Olympics,” she said. “We essentially opened our arms and said, ‘The world is welcome here.’ That same ability to share our own cultural heritage at work brings our sense of pride and belonging.”

You can watch and listen to Dr. Thompson’s broadcast on the Equity and Inclusion website.

Here's who won prizes

Many facilities and teams across the system celebrated the week with activities like potlucks and food fairs, decorations, and more.

"I'm always excited when Diversity Week comes around because I love to see the various ways caregivers embrace the spirit of the week," says Natasha Ovuoba, multicultural caregiver resource group chair. "I think our caregivers were excited to share their cultures and backgrounds with each other. Celebrating Diversity Week year after year creates a greater sense of belonging among us and makes us stronger as an organization."
