Kidney disease treatment

Learn more about your treatment options.

Continuous renal replacement therapy is a continuous form of dialysis usually used in the hospital for people with severe kidney failure who need gentle, ongoing blood filtering.

Dialysis is a treatment that removes excess fluid and waste from your body when your kidneys can no longer do so. It is a lifesaving option for people with advanced kidney failure. There are two main types of dialysis, both of which can be done at home:

  • Peritoneal dialysis – uses a special fluid that goes into your belly to clean your blood. Your body’s natural lining acts as a filter to remove waste and extra fluid. Many people do this treatment at home, often overnight while they sleep.
  • Hemodialysis – filters your blood through a machine, typically at a clinic or dialysis center, though it can also be done at home with proper training.
People with chronic kidney disease can slow the progression to advanced kidney failure by living a healthy lifestyle. Managing other chronic conditions, staying physically active, and maintaining a healthy weight can all help protect your kidneys and reduce the risk of the disease getting worse.
A kidney transplant is surgery that replaces a diseased kidney with a healthy one from a donor. You can receive a kidney from someone on the deceased donor waiting list or from a living donor, often a family member or friend.
For people with advanced kidney failure who choose not to have a transplant or dialysis, we offer medical management without dialysis. The goal of this approach is to help you live as comfortably and fully as possible for as long as possible.
