The Maternal Mental Health Unit at Alta View Hospital is a dedicated inpatient behavioral health program designed specifically for individuals who are pregnant or within one year postpartum. Opening in June 2026, this unit provides timely access to psychiatric stabilization, therapeutic support, and coordinated care in a setting intentionally separate from general behavioral health units.

The program focuses on the unique emotional, psychological, and physical needs of the perinatal period. Patients receive evidence‑informed treatment delivered with compassion, dignity, and clinical expertise—helping them begin recovery in a safe, supportive environment.

Services and support

  • 24/7 inpatient behavioral health care in a dedicated maternal mental health setting
  • Psychiatric stabilization during pregnancy and throughout the postpartum period
  • Postpartum behavioral health treatment for depression, anxiety, trauma‑related conditions, mood disorders, and other serious perinatal mental health concerns
  • Therapeutic interventions tailored to the needs of pregnant and postpartum patients
  • Care from clinicians specializing in perinatal psychiatry, trauma‑informed care, and maternal‑infant bonding
  • Safety planning and discharge coordination to support continuity of care after hospitalization

Who we serve

The Maternal Mental Health Unit provides inpatient care for pregnant and postpartum patients—up to one year after childbirth—who need a higher level of behavioral health support. Patients may be experiencing:

  • Postpartum depression
  • Severe anxiety or panic symptoms
  • Trauma‑related conditions
  • Postpartum psychosis
  • Mood instability
  • Other urgent perinatal mental health concerns requiring close monitoring

The goal is to help patients stabilize, feel supported, and transition to the next stage of care with a clear, compassionate plan for recovery.

Why specialized maternal mental health care matters

Mental health conditions during pregnancy and the first year postpartum are both common and treatable. Yet many individuals do not receive timely or specialized care. Best‑practice perinatal mental health models emphasize:

  • Early identification
  • Specialized assessment and treatment
  • Trauma‑informed, evidence‑based care
  • Coordinated referral pathways
  • Strong discharge and follow‑up planning

By establishing a dedicated maternal mental health unit, Alta View Hospital expands access to focused, evidence‑informed inpatient care that supports patient safety, emotional well‑being, and family stability during a critical period.

What makes this unit different

Unlike general psychiatric settings, the Maternal Mental Health Unit at Alta View Hospital is intentionally designed around the realities of pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and early parenthood. This specialized environment offers:

  • Clinicians trained in the clinical complexity of perinatal mental health
  • A compassionate, family‑centered approach
  • A setting that supports maternal‑infant bonding when clinically appropriate
  • Integration within Alta View Hospital’s expanding Behavioral Health Center, improving access for families across the Salt Lake Valley

This dedicated model reduces barriers to care and ensures patients receive treatment that reflects the unique challenges of the perinatal period.
