Benefits of volunteering

Why volunteer? Let us count the ways:

  • Make a difference in the lives of our Caregivers, patients, and visitors.
  • Meet generous, friendly like-minded people while serving a collective purpose.
  • Give back to your community through service to others.
  • Contribute to the Intermountain Health mission to reveal and foster God’s healing love.
  • Develop professional skills and gain valuable healthcare experience that can help you when applying for jobs, scholarships, and college programs.
  • Gain a better view of the relationship between the patient, healthcare providers and the community.

Before you volunteer

Before you can proudly wear that volunteer badge, there are a few steps you’ll need to take, including:

  • Volunteer Application - Adult Volunteer Application
  • A background check and drug test
  • Proof of vaccinations, Tuberculosis test, and flu shot
  • Orientation- both hospital and department specific
  • Additional department and service specific paperwork

To Consider

Typically, volunteers serve an average of 2-4 hours per week. As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to grow, learn, make new friends, exchange ideas and contribute to your community. Volunteers receive complimentary uniforms, and a meal in the café during your shift. We do require a minimum of a 1-year commitment but hope you will love volunteering so much you won’t want to leave!

Additionally, you must be at least 16 years old.

Ready to learn more or apply?

If you are at least 16 years old or older, simply complete and submit the online Volunteer Application.

Once we’ve received your application, we’ll schedule an interview to get to know you better. During the interview, we will discuss your skills and interests to determine an appropriate department and position for you. Upon successful completion of a background check and TB screening, new volunteers complete both site specific and department specific orientation.

Frequently asked questions

You can volunteer in many positions and departments at Good Samaritan Hospital

If you are at least 16 years old or older, simply complete and submit the online Volunteer Application.

We have a wide variety of different volunteer assignments and strive to find a position that is a perfect fit for each volunteer accepted into the program.

Some positions in departments such as the Emergency Department and Floor Hosts are patient-focused. We also have volunteers who visit patients with therapy dogs or the comfort cart allowing them opportunity for patient interaction.

Other volunteers work in staff-support roles in a variety of hospital departments and offices performing clerical and other support tasks.

We also have volunteers who work with hospital guests and visitors. They assist at the welcome desk, and provide information to guests in the surgery waiting room.

The interview portion of the application process gives us the chance to get to know you, your availability, your interests, and your skills, and then we match these things with our open assignments. Again, we do our best to place you in an exciting and worthwhile position.

We want you to enjoy volunteering! We hope to find a position you like right from the start. However, if other opportunities arise, your schedule changes, or you want to try something new, changes can be made.

Caring Canines FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about the Caring Canines program

The Caring Canine Program provides joy and comfort to the patients, caregivers and visitors at Good Samaritan Hospital through the loving touch of our Caring Canines and with the company of their handlers.

Human volunteers require the same onboarding process as all other volunteers. For our Canine volunteers we require the following:

  • Must be registered as a therapy dog through either Alliance of Therapy Dogs or Pet Partners.
  • Must pass a health exam (including a fecal exam) by a licensed vet of your choice within the last 12 months.
  • Must be current on rabies vaccination.
  • Must complete three shadow visits with a current Caring Canine team.

We are very thankful for any time that you and your pet can give to visit our patients. At this time, we do not require you to schedule regular visits. It completely depends on what time/s work for you and your dog.
