Water Births at Good Samaritan Hospital

Experience a calming, empowering approach to labor and birth through our new Water Birth Program, offered in partnership with our certified midwifery team. Warm-water immersion has been used for centuries to support comfort during labor, and modern evidence continues to highlight its benefits for many women.

Research shows that water immersion during labor can promote comfort, relaxation, and smoother labor progression. Large evidence reviews and randomized trials have linked water birth to:

  • Reduced pain levels and decreased need for epidurals or opioid pain medication
  • Shorter labor and less need for Pitocin® to speed contractions
  • Higher rates of intact perineum and lower rates of episiotomy in hospital settings
  • Lower risk of postpartum hemorrhage and maternal infection
  • High maternal satisfaction and a more soothing birth experience overall

Our midwifery team offers water birth to patients who:

  • Have low‑risk, uncomplicated pregnancies (generally 37–41 weeks’ gestation)
  • Have no medical conditions requiring continuous interventions
  • Complete prenatal counseling related to water birth
  • Meet screening criteria during active labor
  • Some conditions may require traditional (land) delivery for safety. Your provider will guide you through all eligibility considerations.

During a water birth, you’ll labor—and if eligible—deliver your baby in a warm, specially designed birth tub. Water immersion can support buoyancy, movement, and comfort throughout the birthing process. Studies show many patients experience reduced pain and greater autonomy when laboring in water.

Our birthing suites feature:

  • Large, deep tubs designed for labor and birth
  • Warm, adjustable water temperature
  • Soft lighting and space for partners
  • Equipment for safe fetal and maternal monitoring

If any maternal or fetal concerns arise, your midwife may recommend exiting the tub—this is part of our safety-first approach following national clinical guidelines.

Immediately after birth, your baby is brought gently to the water’s surface and placed skin-to-skin. Newborn assessments occur promptly, following routine safety protocols. Research shows no difference in Apgar scores or respiratory issues between water and land births.

Most families stay in the tub only briefly post‑delivery before moving to the bed for continued bonding.

Our Water Birth Program is designed with safety, comfort, and personalized care at the forefront.

  • Staffed by certified nurse midwives trained extensively in water birth techniques
  • Equipped with evidence-based protocols for monitoring, sanitation, and emergency procedures
  • Supported by obstetric, pediatric, and anesthesia teams

We follow guidance from leading organizations and integrate insights from the latest global studies to offer a safe, modern water birth experience.

Schedule an appointment with one of our certified nurse midwives to learn more about water births and to see if it’s the right fit for you.
