What to Expect
Read below to understand what you can expect from your visit to an Intermountain Surgery Center.
Registration
Call to Register
You need to register for your surgery by calling 801-906-2600. Hours of operation are Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The registration office will call you if they haven’t heard from you.
This call is to verify your contact information, billing address, insurance information. You will also be asked to pay for any co-pays, deductibles or deposits for your procedure.
It will be helpful to have your insurance and payment information handy for this call.
Pre-Screening Phone Call
About a week before your procedure, you will receive a call from a nurse to do a pre-screen.
This call is to make sure that you meet the criteria for surgery in the surgery center. This includes things like your age and Body Mass Index (BMI) and underlying health conditions.
You will also be given instructions about what to do prior to your surgery.
Please have your health forms available for this call.
All patients are required to get a COVID test 72 hours prior to surgery.
Arrival Time Phone Call
The business day before your surgery, you will receive a call from the Surgery Center to let you know what time to arrive for your procedure.
What You Need to Know Before Your Surgery
Eating
Do not eat after 11 p.m. the night before your surgery. You may consume clear liquids such as apple juice, Gatorade, water, etc up to two hours before your arrival time. Failure to comply will likely result in your surgery being rescheduled.
Medications
The prescreen call nurse will instruct you on which medications you can take and which medications not to take.
Transportation and Support
Arrange for a ride home and someone to be with you for 24 hours following your surgery. You can’t drive yourself home since you’ll be under influence of medication/anesthesia.
Pace-makers/defibrillators
Notify the nurse if you have a pacemaker or defibrillator. They will want to know the brand and the date they were last checked. Defibrillators should be checked 6 months and pacemakers 12 months prior to surgery.
Pregnancy
Females who haven’t had a hysterectomy will be asked to give a urine sample at the Surgery Center.
Clothing & Valuables
On the day of surgery, wear casual, loose-fitting clothing. Don’t wear metal hair accessories or hair extensions with metal clips. Remove jewelry and piercings. If your wear eyeglasses bring a case to put them in. Leave all valuables at home except for I.D., insurance card, and form of payment.
Children
For children having surgery, please bring a comfort item (blanket or stuffed animal). Parents must sign consent forms on the day of surgery.
Visitors
Visitor policy may change due to the COVID situation in the community. Please check with your nurse prior to your visit.
Day of Surgery
Check-in
Please arrive at your designated time. Bring your photo ID, insurance ID, form of payment and your completed history and medication forms to check-in.Surgery Prep
After you check in, you will meet with your nurse who will review your health history, medication history and other paperwork. You will also meet with your surgeon – be sure to ask any questions you have about the procedure, operative site, what you can and can’t do following the surgery and when you can return to work. You will also meet with your anesthesiologist.Waiting
While you are in surgery, your visitors may wait in the Surgery Center waiting area. They should remain there so that the surgeon can visit with them following your surgery.Going Home
Before you leave the Surgery Center, you will be given instructions about what to do at home. You must not drive an automobile, operate machinery or make critical decisions for 24 hours following anesthesia. You may experience some drowsiness, nausea, muscle aches, sore throat, occasional dizziness or headaches. These effects will lessen in the hours following your surgery. Many patients do not feel up to their typical activities the next day. Expect some general tiredness and surgical discomfort. If you experience any difficulties after your surgery, contact your surgeon.A nurse from the Surgery Center will call you the next working day after your surgery to check on your progress.
