Intermountain Health offers a full-time, paid Apprenticeship training program to become a Surgical Technologist within our operating rooms. During the program, Apprentices are full-time Intermountain employees, known as caregivers. This 'earn and learn' opportunity is available to current employees and non-employees.

Intermountain Health Surgical Technology Program

Program is offered at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah and remotely at selected Intermountain hospital sites based upon workforce needs.

  • Upon completion of the 9-month program, you will be qualified to work in our ORs and become a Technologist in Surgery-Certified.
  • This program option will teach and train the individual to learn how to pass a national certification test called a Technologist in Surgery-Certified (TS-C NCCT)
  • Employees will be selected to work at hospitals with the greatest vacancies to fill staffing shortages. Candidates will be made aware of which hospitals will be hiring.
  • Classes will be held at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah and remotely at selected hospital sites in Southern Utah, Montana, and Colorado based upon workforce needs of hospitals. Training locations are subject to change. (See program information page for a list of participating remote sites). Clinical rotations will be offered at the hospital where you will be working after graduation.
  • During the program, apprentices will be full-time Intermountain Health employees, working 36 hours per week (6 + months).  Externship (training in the OR) will increase to 40 hours per week (3 + months) (See program information page for details).
  • The purpose of this program is to fill surgical tech vacancies at the hospitals that have the greatest vacancy needs.
  • Candidates who apply for the job will be asked (surveyed) to identify which high-need hospitals they are willing to work after graduation.
  • The list of high-need hospitals will be listed in the program information page.  The list is subject to change and will be sent to those who apply for a job.
  • Candidates who are offered a position will be assigned and hired to work at a specific hospital.  The commitment for participating in this program is to work full-time for 1 year (2080 hours) at an Intermountain Health hospital after graduation.
  • If you cannot or will not work at any of our high-need hospitals, we ask that you withdraw your candidacy.
  • If you want to work at facilities that aren't listed, we encourage you to apply at one of the local community colleges or technical schools to obtain training and come back and apply for a job with Intermountain afterward.
  • You will be paid on-the-job for classwork & clinical externship rotations
  • Tuition & course fees are paid by Intermountain
  • Job placement upon successful program completion
  • Full-time pay (includes benefits) for 36 hours/week for 6 months (class/lab). Compensation increases at mid-point of class.
  • Ongoing mentorship throughout the program
