About our program

Intermountain Health’s PGY2 ambulatory care residency is an innovative and dynamic program committed to training the rising generation of ambulatory care pharmacists into leaders and innovators, equipped to advance the entire healthcare team and help patients live the healthiest lives possible. Residents develop advanced skills in patient care, interprofessional practice, education, and academia through a comprehensive rotation curriculum. Residents gain invaluable experience in program development by personally establishing, implementing and/or operating a new clinical pharmacy service in an ambulatory care clinic.

We use a combination of core longitudinal experiences to establish the skills needed to manage an ambulatory clinical practice and diverse block rotations throughout the year to allow for experience in almost any ambulatory care setting. From pediatric diabetes management to adult heart failure and transplant to geriatric comprehensive medication management, past residents and potential candidates often comment on the breadth of block rotations offered. Our program also emphasizes innovation and practice development through focused projects that actively expand ambulatory care throughout the organization.

Where we train

Intermountain Health is the largest health system in the Intermountain West. As Intermountain Health continues to grow, so do our ambulatory care pharmacy services.  Ambulatory pharmacy services include embedded primary and specialty clinical pharmacists comprehensive medication management, tele-pharmacy population health initiatives, and medication access support.  Pharmacists are able to practice with a high level scope via collaborative practice agreements.  Ambulatory clinics and services approach care with a patient-centered, team-based model with the collaborative goal to help each patient live their healthiest life possible.

Longitudinal ambulatory care practice management

Residents will work as ambulatory care pharmacists for two days per week throughout the entire residency year where they will get to experience managing and expanding an ambulatory care practice.

Large variety of block experiences offered

Intermountain Heath is the largest healthcare system in the Intermountain West and has clinical involvement in every aspect of care. The PGY2 ambulatory care program takes full advantage of the system and partnering systems to offer experiences in any area of interest. In addition to the listed rotations offered, past residents with specific interests have been able to create custom experiences, such as chronic pain management or pediatric care.

Collaborative environment

Every ambulatory care site at Intermountain is based on a collaborative care model where the pharmacist works directly with the entire care team. Providers and other clinical staff are extremely supportive of pharmacist contributions and often invite expanded clinical roles when ambulatory care pharmacist services have been started.

Training is provided in a variety of settings to equip residents with skills necessary to perform confidently in ambulatory care.

Rotations

  • Graduate from an ACPE-accredited pharmacy program with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree
  • Successful completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency
  • BLS Certification
  • Candidates must be eligible for Utah licensure

  • Expected to obtain Utah pharmacist licensure within the first 90 days of the residency program
  • Attain "achieved" on at least 80% of all objectives (including 100% of the objectives in competency areas surrounding patient care)
  • Completion of one ACPE Accredited Presentation and one interdisciplinary continuing education presentation
  • Completion of a research project manuscript, poster presentation, and podium presentation
  • Write or revise a collaborative practice agreement
  • Develop a business plan proposal for service line development or growth

Residents will staff every third Saturday and one minor and one major holiday. The residents staff transition of care telepharmacy service and anticoagulation telepharmacy services. Additionally, the residents will staff 5 on-call weeks for anticoagulation services.

Candidates selected to the pharmacy residency program are paid a competitive resident salary and receive a complete benefits package.

Resident Salary

  • Approximate PGY2 stipend: $76,000 per year 

Pharmacy Resident Benefits

  • Classified as full-time employees of Intermountain Health
  • Paid a competitive resident salary
  • Eligible to receive a complete benefits package including retirement, health, dental, vision and life insurance
  • PTO is accrued at the rate according to hospital policy (currently approximately 25 days per year). This rate is subject to adjustment. The resident should generally expect to use ≤ 17 days of PTO (plus 8 paid holidays) during the residency year and may not use more than 25 days
  • Access to other employee benefits such as the employee wellness program, Employee Assistance Program (EAP) support, and the employee discount program.

Professional Development

  • Residents attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and an appropriate regional residency conference as determined by the individual sites.
  • PGY2 residents are also generally permitted to attend an applicable specialty conference.
  • In addition, internal CE and other professional development opportunities are offered on a regular basis.
