About our program

The PGY2 Pediatric pharmacy residency program at Primary Children’s Hospital Salt Lake City Campus prepares residents to become an integral member of the healthcare team caring for children as the medication therapy expert.

Following successful completion of the program, trainees will be qualified to pursue pediatric clinical pharmacist or clinical faculty positions, as well as preparing them to obtain board certification in pediatric pharmacotherapy

Where we train

Primary Children's Hospital is a Level I trauma center equipped to care for neonates, children and adolescents with complex illnesses and injuries. Primary Children’s Hospital is associated with the University of Utah School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, enabling patients and staff to benefit from the research and clinical expertise of its faculty.

Founded on the philosophy of “the child first and always,” Primary Children’s Hospital is the pediatric referral center for five states in the Intermountain West – the largest geographical service area of any children’s hospital in the United States.

Our PGY2 training program offers rotations in a variety of settings that equip residents with skills necessary to perform confidently in a pediatric pharmacy position.

Rotations

  • Graduate from an ACPE-accredited pharmacy program with a doctor of pharmacy degree
  • Successful completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency
  • BLS and ACLS certification
  • Eligible for Utah licensure

  • Expected to obtain Utah pharmacist licensure within the first 90 days of the residency program
  • Completion of two formal continuing education presentations
  • Completion of a year-long resident research project
  • Attain "achieved" on at least 80% of all objectives (including 100% of the objectives in competency areas surrounding patient care)
  • Obtain BLS and ACLS certifications
  • Precept learners on rotation and teach at local colleges of pharmacy
  • Quality Improvement Project
  • Travel to ASHP Midyear Annual Meeting and the Mountain States Residency Conference

Intermountain Health's PGY2 pediatric residency at Primary Children's Hospital Salt Lake City Campus offers flexible scheduling of learning experiences, which is imperative to providing a customizable experience for the resident.

Application Deadline

  • All application information must be received prior to 10pm MST on January 2nd, 2025.

Application submission through PhORCAS including:

  • Current curriculum vitae
  • Letter of intent addressing why you wish to complete a PGY2 Pediatric pharmacy residency at Primary Children's Hospital Salt Lake City Campus
  • Three letters of recommendation

Candidates selected to the pharmacy residency program are paid a competitive resident salary and receive a complete benefits package.

Resident Salary

  • Approximate PGY2 stipend: $76,000 per year

Pharmacy Resident Benefits

  • Classified as full-time employees of Intermountain Health
  • Paid a competitive resident salary
  • Eligible to receive a complete benefits package including retirement, health, dental, vision and life insurance
  • PTO is accrued at the rate according to hospital policy (currently approximately 25 days per year). This rate is subject to adjustment. The resident should generally expect to use ≤ 17 days of PTO during the residency year and may not use more than 25 days
  • Access to other employee benefits such as the employee wellness program, Employee Assistance Program (EAP) support, and the employee discount program.

Professional Development

  • Residents attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and an appropriate regional residency conference as determined by the individual sites.
  • PGY2 residents are also generally permitted to attend an applicable specialty conference.
  • In addition, internal CE and other professional development opportunities are offered on a regular basis.
