About our program

The goal of our residency program is to provide residents with the confidence, education, and skills necessary to further the field of pharmacy. Our hospital specializes in cardiac care, orthopedic procedures, neurology care, oncology services, emergency care, and critical care. After completing the residency, the resident will have a well-rounded knowledge level of pharmacy care in various settings. The residents will have the opportunity to precept pharmacy students from multiple pharmacy schools and to obtain a teaching certificate. We intentionally work toward an Intermountain Health that reflects our diverse communities and provides culturally competent care, health equity, and a sense of belonging amongst all our caregivers (employees).

Rotations

Application Deadline

  • All application information must be received in PhORCAS prior to 10 pm MST on January 2nd, 2026

Applicants must submit the following information through the PhORCAS system:

  • PhORCAS standard residency application
  • Expected to obtain Pharmacist licensure within the first 90 days in the state of the residency program
  • Current curriculum vitae
  • Three recommendations (per standard PhORCAS form)
  • Letter of intent
  • College of pharmacy transcripts
  • Residents begin staffing during week 6 of residency (after orientation, approximately early August) through end of residency
  • Residents staff on Saturday and Sunday every other weekend and residents alternate weekends
  • Holidays: One resident staffs Thanksgiving and Memorial Day. One resident staffs Labor Day and Christmas. Holidays are scheduled to align with the resident’s usual every other weekend staffing. If the holiday falls during weekdays, the resident will staff those weekdays in addition to their usual every other weekend staffing. Holiday staffing on weekdays replaces usual rotation days.
  • Most staffing shifts are day shifts.  Residents may be required to staff a minimal number of evening shifts, including during holiday staffing, and they will be notified of this in advance.
  • Staffing location timeline
    • August: Med Rec shifts (8-hour shift)
    • September through March: central pharmacy shifts (8-hour shift)
    • April through June: decentralized pharmacy shifts (10-hour shift)
  • Staffing location, shift duration, and shift time (day versus evening) may be adjusted based on resident licensure status, unforeseen and/or major changes to department staffing needs, or updates to department staffing structure.  Residents will be notified as far in advance as possible of any changes to staffing assignments.
  • Residents may use up to four days of PTO on their usual staffing weekends. The resident must notify the scheduling team of planned weekend PTO by the schedule request due date, and that weekend shift will be filled by the usual process of the scheduling team (i.e. resident does not have to find coverage).  In limited circumstances, residents may use PTO on their usual holiday staffing days.  The resident must find their own coverage for holiday staffing days. This would count towards the max of four PTO days noted above, and this must be discussed with and approved in advance by the RPD or RPC.
  • Residents must complete all assigned staffing shifts, along with the holiday staffing noted above.  Resident staffing requirements may be adjusted in cases of extreme and unforeseen circumstances (i.e. pandemic, critical staffing shortage, unexpected overstaffing in which other staff need shifts to fulfill assigned FTE).  Any adjustment to staffing requirements must be approved by the RPD/RPC, Director of Pharmacy, and staffing rotation preceptor, and the resident will be given as much advanced notice as possible.

Candidates selected to the pharmacy residency program are paid a competitive resident salary and receive a complete benefits package.

Living in Denver

Denver is a wonderful place for residents and fellows to live thanks to its proximity to the Rocky Mountains, as well as being in the heart of a vibrant city with world-class amenities. Additionally, our trainees are part of a small and dedicated work family. The community we have built among our attending physicians, residents, fellows, and staff makes our program both incredibly supportive and incredibly strong.
