About our program
The PGY2 internal medicine pharmacy residency program at Intermountain Medical Center provides a supportive and well-rounded learning experience in one of the top teaching hospitals in the nation. Residents will be exposed to patients with a wide range of disease states and varying acuities on specialized medicine services, including medical telemetry, orthopedics, medical endocrine, medicine oncology, and neuro medical units. Acute conditions include infectious diseases, complications of renal/liver failure, and abnormalities affecting gastrointestinal, neurologic, endocrine, and pulmonary systems, amongst many other complex disease states. The program provides ample learning opportunities in a fast-paced and challenging environment.

- Graduate from an ACPE-accredited pharmacy program with a doctor of pharmacy degree
- Successful completion of an ASHP-accredited or candidate status PGY1 pharmacy residency
- BLS and ACLS certification
- Eligible for Utah licensure
Minimum requirements include:
Minimum requirements have been set for completion of the Intermountain Medical Center’s PGY2 Internal Medicine Pharmacy Residency program. The requirements and progress will be reviewed with the resident at each quarterly evaluation. Failure to meet the minimum requirements by the end of the residency year will result in the resident not receiving a certificate of achievement and the resident will not complete the PGY2 residency program. Consequences of failure to obtain appropriate licensure, BLS or ACLS certification are addressed in the General Residency Information section of this manual.
- Completion of PGY2 Internal Medicine Orientation.
- Obtain and maintain BLS and ALS certification and participate in management of medical emergencies
- All R1.1 (R1.1.1-R1.1.9) objectives are achieved for the residency (ACHR). A minimum of 16 additional objectives achieved for the residency (ACHR) – 80% required total. No objectives with a final rating of NI.
- Pass all collaborative practice agreement competencies (vancomycin, insulin, anticoagulation, aminoglycoside).
- Completion of all required learning experiences (including all required activities and assignments as assigned by primary preceptor).
- Completion of all PharmAcademic™ evaluations and requirements.
- Successful completion of the ASHP PGY2 Internal Medicine Appendix
- Complete a research or quality improvement project. Key activities include the following:
- Complete CITI training.
- Create a project plan (concept sheet).
- Submit concept sheet for Pharmacy SRB approval.
- Submit project to IRB and respond to all stipulations from IRB to obtain approval.
- Once approved by IRB, complete data collection and analysis.
- Complete project design.
- Submit an abstract for poster presentation at a professional meeting during the residency year (e.g. Vizient Pharmacy Network Resident Poster Session at ASHP Midyear).
- Present a platform presentation of the final project (e.g MSC).
- Create a final project report submitted to the residency program director before the end of residency. The report shall be written using a format and style consistent with publication in a professional journal, including project subject, background, methods, results, discussion and conclusions. Residents are encouraged to submit their project for publication.
- Complete work and project report on a secondary (“minor”) project. Examples include: MUE, clinical program development/enhancement/analysis, pipeline forecast, cost or budget analysis, quality assurance.
- Develop and present a Fall CE Formal Presentation.
- Develop and present a Spring Seminar Formal Presentation.
- Develop and present two Twizzlers and Nerds presentations.
- Prepare and present a medication use project (e.g. drug class review, treatment guideline, treatment protocol/pathway, collaborative practice agreement, utilization management criteria, and/or order set)
- Precept at least 1 APPE student or PGY1 resident on rotation (Learner Precepting).
- Contribute to the work of an organizational committee or work group concerned with the improvement of medication use policies or guidelines. Resident will be expected to attend at least 75% of committee meetings over 52 week period.
- Internal Medicine PGY2 Longitudinal Staffing
- Average staffing every 3rd weekend, 2 x 8 hour shifts (total of 32 weekend staffing shifts) + one major holiday + one minor holiday.
- Required Deliverables for Educational Objectives as listed in the appendix
Residents are required to provide staffing support as part of their program and stipend. Residents work (on average) every 3rd weekend, 2 x 8-hour shifts on Saturday/Sunday covering any of the following specialty medicine units: medical telemetry, orthopedics, medical endocrine, medical oncology, neuro rehab, or neuro medicine. A total of 32 weekend staffing shifts will be required for successful completion of the program.
Residents are also required to work one major holiday and one minor holiday. Major holidays include New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. Minor holidays include Martin Luther King Jr Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.

Candidates selected to the pharmacy residency program are paid a competitive resident salary and receive a complete benefits package.
Resident Salary
- Approximate PGY2 stipend: $79,400 per year
Pharmacy Resident Benefits
- Classified as full-time employees of Intermountain Health
- Paid a competitive resident salary
- Eligible to receive a complete benefits package including retirement, health, dental, vision and life insurance
- PTO is accrued at the rate according to hospital policy (currently approximately 25 days per year). This rate is subject to adjustment. The resident should generally expect to use ≤ 17 days of PTO during the residency year and may not use more than 25 days

Professional Development
- Residents attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and an appropriate regional residency conference as determined by the individual sites.
- PGY2 residents are also generally permitted to attend an applicable specialty conference.
- In addition, internal CE and other professional development opportunities are offered on a regular basis.
