How to admit a patient

Learn more about the admission process for patients at Primary Children's

  • Call the Intermountain Children's Health Physician Access Line 24/7.
  • Referring providers will have a discussion with the Admissions Officer and Nursing Supervisor to facilitate direct admission.
  • Direct transfers of newborns from other hospitals to the Intermountain Children's Health NICU are facilitated by calling the NICU directly at (801) 662-4100.

  • Same day direct transfers from an outside clinic, hospital, or emergency department to a Intermountain Children’s Health inpatient bed (including pediatric intensive care unit and cardiac intensive care unit).
  • Emergency Department evaluation is not required.

These patients are not considered candidates for the direct admission process:

  • Scheduled admissions, such as scheduled surgical procedures, Rapid Treatment Unit, sedated procedures, and chemotherapy admissions.
  • Patients requiring behavioral health intervention, whether medically cleared or not. These patients should be directed to the Intermountain Children's Health Emergency Department.
  • Certain respiratory patients, such as those on high flow nasal cannula and continuous albuterol.

Email us or call (801) 661-6523 to request medical staff membership and/or privileges at Intermountain Children’s Health. Please note: the initial credentialing process usually takes 4 – 6 months, so please plan accordingly.

Child Life Internship

Child Life Services are provided at eight hospitals — two free-standing children's hospital and six community hospitals. Only one application is needed to apply for all intermountain hospitals.

Children's Psychology Internship

The APA-accredited Psychology Internship adheres to a scholar-practitioner model, preparing doctoral-level interns for clinical practice. Interns are involved in training activities on two Salt Lake City campuses.
