IMC General Surgery Residency

The General Surgery Residency at Intermountain Medical Center offers a comprehensive, community-focused five-year training program.

IMC General Surgery Residents

About our program

We offer a full spectrum of both general and complex subspecialty surgery to our patients and have a very busy trauma service, all of which provides outstanding opportunities for trainees to learn from skilled and dedicated surgeon educators.

We have been training surgery residents at Intermountain Medical Center (IMC) since our collaboration with the University of Utah began in 2007, and for decades prior at Intermountain’s previous flagship, LDS Hospital. Owing to our commitment to the people we serve, our enthusiasm as surgical educators, and the need for more trained surgeons (especially in the Western U.S.), we are expanding surgical training opportunities in Salt Lake City with our own community-focused, five-year residency, which was accredited by ACGME in September 2024.

Where we train

Intermountain Medical Center is a not-for-profit, 500-bed hospital widely recognized for providing high-quality care and is a national leader in efficient, community-oriented healthcare. It is also one of two Level I Trauma centers in the state and is the regional referral center for Intermountain Health west of the Rockies. IMC is also the home of highly competitive podiatry and transitional-year residencies, in addition to our own general surgery residency.

Intermountain Medical center was recognized by Vizient as the #5 Top Performing Comprehensive Academic Medical Center in September 2024. Our additional site, Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, was named #14 by Vizient in the Large, Specialized Complex Care Medical Center cohort. See all of our specialty rotations and locations under Curriculum, below.

Program details

Education is provided in a traditional rotation model where residents round on and manage complex patients on the hospital floors, operate with attending supervision, provide consultations in the Emergency Department and other inpatient units, and rotate through the Shock Trauma ICU to manage complex trauma and surgical patients and become facile with bedside procedures.

Attending mentorship is provided by a faculty who have trained in general surgery and included those who have fellowship training in trauma / critical care, surgical oncology, colorectal surgery, minimally invasive surgery / bariatrics, pediatric surgery, transplant surgery, and vascular surgery.

Didactic sessions include basic science conference, pathology conferences, surgery grand rounds and M&M, and shared didactic series with Internal Medicine colleagues. Residents are encouraged to join weekly or bi-weekly Intermountain-wide surgical specialty discussion boards and tumor multidisciplinary conferences.

Our program has a thoughtfully structured robotics curriculum that can start as early as day 1 of intern year. Simulation training is available at all times of day when actual robotic surgery experiences are not available to assist on. The hospital has a high volume of experienced robotic surgeons across many specialties including a range from hernias to thoracic to Whipples.

Trauma Grand Rounds - Local, regional, or national experts presenting on topics specific to their practice or research.

Mock Oral Boards - Quarterly conference where residents are taken through oral board type scenarios with immediate attending feedback. This is done in a small group format so that all residents can learn techniques and knowledge from the examiners and examinees simultaneously.
