2,000+ surgical cases annually
Residents graduate with exceptional operative experience, logging more than 2,000 surgical procedures, well above the CPME Minimum Activity Volume (MAV) requirements.
Comprehensive surgical exposure
Outstanding surgeons are developed through both volume and complexity. Residents participate in advanced reconstructive procedures, complex revision surgery, diabetic limb preservation, trauma, sports medicine, and cutting-edge techniques, including 3D-printed total ankle arthroplasty.
By graduation, residents have experience managing the full spectrum of foot and ankle pathology.
Mentorship that lasts a lifetime
For more than 50 years, our faculty has remained committed to a tradition of mentorship, education, and clinical excellence. Many are graduates of the program themselves, choosing to stay in Colorado to teach, mentor, and invest in the next generation of foot and ankle surgeons.
Residents benefit from close relationships with experienced clinicians who are deeply committed to their professional and personal success.
A powerful alumni network
Established by graduates of our residency program, the Highlands Foot & Ankle Institute based in Denver connects current residents with an extensive network of accomplished alumni across the country.
This lifelong professional community provides mentorship, career guidance, research collaboration, and lasting professional relationships well beyond residency.
Serve beyond the operating room
Through Essential Strides, a nonprofit founded by program alumni, residents have the opportunity to provide foot and ankle care to underserved communities in Peru.
Participating third-year residents experience firsthand the impact of humanitarian medicine while broadening their clinical skills in resource-limited settings.
A culture of academic excellence
Clinical excellence begins with exceptional education. Residents participate in a comprehensive academic curriculum that includes:
- Weekly Journal clubs

Living in Denver
Denver is a wonderful place for residents and fellows to live thanks to its proximity to the Rocky Mountains, as well as being in the heart of a vibrant city with world-class amenities. Additionally, our trainees are part of a small and dedicated work family. The community we have built among our attending physicians, residents, fellows, and staff makes our program both incredibly supportive and incredibly strong.
