At Intermountain Health, we believe to fully achieve our mission, we must do all we can to have healthy communities and an environment that fosters healing and healthy living. That means we have a responsibility and opportunity to set the standard for sustainable operations, like access to electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. There are currently 84 charging stations across 38 Intermountain care sites.
Beginning January 1, 2025, Intermountain’s EV charging stations will begin charging a nominal fee for use.
- First 4 hours of charging: Free
- Every hour after first 4: $3 per hour; capped at $30
Fees will be assessed through the ChargePoint app, Intermountain’s EV charging station host. To set up your ChargePoint account, go to your mobile device’s preferred app store and download ‘ChargePoint.’ Sign up and/or login information can be found here.
Who will be charged a fee?
Any person who uses an Intermountain charging station for their vehicle: caregivers, patients, visitors, community members, vendors, etc.
Why is Intermountain now charging a fee for the EV charging stations?
When the EV charging stations were first installed at Intermountain care sites, the stations did charge a fee: .50 cents per hour for the first two hours and starting the third hour, rates increased to $10 per hour. However, the fee was discontinued in 2022 as usage rates for the stations across the organization were less than 5% on any given day.
Now, the usage of Intermountain’s EV charging stations has risen to 80% a day across the organization—averaging over 6,000 charging sessions and 1,500 unique uses per month. The need for more stations is also growing. By charging a fee, it will help with:
- Monthly maintenance costs: Our EV stations are currently costing the organization nearly $20,000 per month in kWh usage, support, maintenance, and agreements with our vendor ChargePoint.
- “Squatting”: Some people use the charging stations as their own parking spot for the day, which impacts the demand for an EV charging station from someone who actually needs it. On average, an electric vehicle only needs four hours to fully charge.
- Conflicts with community members: Some individuals who live close to a care site with a charging station have been parking their vehicles on campus overnight for a free overnight charge.
There are several benefits to EV charging stations, including:
- Environmental Benefits: Electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions, helping reduce air pollution and combat climate change.
- Support for Sustainability: Charging stations align with our commitment to sustainability and encourage the adoption of green technologies.
- Convenience: Providing charging options at our care sites supports caregivers and patients who drive electric vehicles, making it easier for them to transition to and use greener alternatives.
- Futureproofing: Investing in EV infrastructure prepares us for a future where electric vehicles become the norm, enhancing our organization’s reputation as an innovator.
- Cost Savings: Electric vehicles can reduce fuel costs and maintenance expenses over time, benefiting both employees and the organization.
- Attracting Talent: Offering EV charging options can make our workplace more attractive to future environmentally conscious caregivers.
- Community Engagement: EV charging stations serve as a community resource, promoting sustainable practices beyond our workforce.
