A woman having a medical crisis helped by caregivers during their LiVe Well walk

“Neither of us had our phones, so we had to think fast and do what we could in the moment…”

Dani Sundquist and Erica Berge from the Employee Services Center were taking a LiVe Well walk when they stopped to help a woman who was having a medical crisis.

Erica, a senior coding consultant, and Dani, a technical manager, were walking in a public parking garage just east of the Employee Services Center. It was a hot day and the temperature in the covered garage was much cooler.

"We were in the middle of a conversation when Erica grabbed my arm as she realized a woman was lying on the concrete who appeared to be having a seizure," says Dani. "Erica immediately sprinted over to her."

"I got on my hands and knees to see if she was still breathing," says Erica. "Dani suggested we help get the woman on her side and place her in a safer position. I know when someone's having a seizure their airway should be protected, they should be on the ground in a safe position so they don't injure themselves, and you should never try to control their movements."

Erica stayed with the woman while Dani ran back to the office for help. "Neither of us had our phones, so we had to think fast and do what we could in the moment," says Dani.

Fortunately, Dani flagged down a driver on her way out who called 911, then offered a jacket, which Erica placed under the woman's head.

"When I was alone with the woman, I managed to get her name, but she was in and out of consciousness, so I didn't learn anything else," says Erica. "She had no identification, so I had very little information. All I knew was, I wasn't going to leave her."

Meanwhile, Dani looked for medical supplies and found a few caregivers in the office with medical backgrounds who could help. She came back to the scene with a nurse from their department, along with Travis Turner, a senior coding consultant and former athletic trainer, and Chad Peterson, a former EMT, who began assessing the woman's condition.

"Dani then waited at the parking garage entrance to direct the first responders through the maze of the parking lot," says Travis, who isn't surprised his coworkers worked so well together to help. "Our department received a LiVe Well Hero Team award this year, and this is just another example of our culture and how we care about each other and the people around us. We all work really well together."

Dani and Erica have been taking daily LiVe Well walks for years — but they always thought the walks enhanced only their health. "I hate to imagine what could have happened to this woman had Erica and Dani not been so quick to act," Travis adds. "They were in the right place at the right time and weren't afraid to help."
