About the Intermountain Simulation Consortium

Simulation at Intermountain Health began in 2006 at Primary Children's Hospital with the creation of an on-site Simulation Lab. That same year, the Women and Newborns Clinical Program incorporated Simulation for Neonatal Resuscitation training. More recently, standardized scenarios were incorporated into all Nurse Residency Programs reviewing concepts such as hypoglycemia, the first five minutes of a code, and blood administration. The Intermountain Simulation Consortium was accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare in 2017.

Supporting Intermountain Health’s mission for system-wide excellence in patient care and employee education, the Intermountain Simulation Consortium directs all simulation activities and is committed to leading and implementing Simulation best practice. This course has been approved as required training for any Intermountain Health employee facilitating Simulation at any Intermountain Health facility, including any education that is being videotaped and debriefed.

The course is available to anyone inside and outside of Intermountain Health who desires to learn more about how simulation is becoming a paradigm shift in healthcare.

Objectives

This course seeks to include a wide range of participants interested in incorporating Simulation into education, team training, design and process improvement in healthcare. Faculty, nurses, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, social workers, first responders and especially physicians will benefit from this training.

  • Identify at least five different applications for simulation, incorporating different levels of technology, fidelity, and moulage
  • Complete an objective-based simulation experience that includes scenario development, pre-briefing, and video based debriefing
  • Demonstrate effective debriefing skills and identify its debriefing’s imperative role in simulation by participating in multiple simulation experiences
  • Incorporate principles of Interprofessional Education (IPE), team training, and Crew Resource Management (CRM) into simulation
  • Implement simulation strategies and program development techniques into educational activities as supported by an appropriate governing

Course participants will be better prepared to implement Simulation as a strategy to improve clinical outcomes in all patient populations as they are introduced to simulation as an engaging and effective learning methodology.

"This was an amazing experience and the skills that I learned will enhance my practice."

FAQ's

Common questions about simulation

Simulation is an engaging and effective learning methodology in healthcare education and practice. Faculty, nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, first responders and other health care team members will leave better prepared to implement Simulation as a strategy to improve patient care and clinical outcomes in all patient populations. During this intense three-day course, attendees will learn to write objectives and create, run, and debrief scenarios immersed both as learners and as facilitators. Didactic content includes Simulation history, philosophy, methods, and adult-learning theory that all aim to show the value that using simulation can achieve.
A Facilitator is an individual that helps bring about an outcome by providing indirect assistance, guidance or supervision. Intermountain Healthcare uses Simulation Facilitators and Educators to run simulation sessions and debrief them.
