History of Sevier Valley Hospital

1941 – A hospital was established on the corner of 100 North and Main Street in downtown Richfield, Utah. The hospital was moved five years later to an 18-bed facility at 201 East 500 North. In 1959, the Catholic Church purchased the hospital and changed the name to St. Michael’s Hospital. It was operated by Catholic nuns from St. Benedict’s Hospital in Ogden, Utah.

1962 – Sevier County purchased the hospital, and it was managed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The name was changed to Sevier Valley LDS Church Hospital. When the Church made the decision to donate all their hospitals to the public in 1975, Intermountain Healthcare, Inc. was created as a not-for-profit organization and assumed management of Sevier Valley Hospital in addition to the other hospitals across Utah.

1976 – With contributions from Sevier, Wayne, and Piute community members, church contributions, and county support, a 29-bed hospital was built at 1000 N Main Street, where the modern hospital now stands.

2014 – Early this year, Sevier Valley Hospital was extensively updated and modernized. Some of the original structure built in 1976 was kept, but a large portion was newly constructed. The new portion of the facility includes an upper floor housing two clinics and a new wing for outpatient services. Construction on an internal Imaging Center was completed later that same year, and an MRI machine was added along with expanded space for CT, ultrasound, and X-ray services.

Also in 2014, thanks in large part to several generous donations, the hospital was able to construct a new dialysis center south of campus. The Sevier Valley Dialysis Center building boasts 12 dialysis stations and was built with state-of-the-art machines.

2015 – The hospital began offering tele-oncology services in addition to infusion therapy, including onsite chemotherapy treatments and virtual consultations with oncologists. An expansion of the OR area and services was also completed this year.

2017 – Construction on a new Women's and Newborn Center was completed with state-of-the-art birth rooms, and, in 2018, an Emergency Department expansion was completed to increase capacity. It was expanded again between 2018-2020 and included trauma rooms for future trauma designation.

2022 – A Classic Air Medical base was established on the campus of Sevier Valley Hospital with a dedicated air crew and medical helicopter tagged “RU” for Richfield, Utah.

2023 – Expansions of lab, respiratory, and infusion and wound care areas were completed with a new north entrance for infusion patients.

Today – Currently, 48 physicians and advanced practice providers offer care at Sevier Valley Hospital in 17-plus medical specialties, and our services continue to grow.
