Understanding air ambulance and medical transport

Common air ambulance questions

An air ambulance is a specialized medical aircraft that provides ICU‑level medical air transport when ground or commercial travel isn’t safe. Air ambulance services are staffed by critical care teams and equipped like a mobile ICU.
Patients may need air ambulance transport if they are critically ill or injured, require ICUlevel monitoring or specialty care, or must return home from a distant location safely.
Visit our Request a quote page to call, email, or submit the online form—our team is available at any time to answer questions and guide next steps.
After an air ambulance transfer is requested, our medical air transport team begins a coordinated review process to ensure safe, timely care. Transport coordinators gather required medical records and patient information, which are reviewed by a clinical coordinator to confirm the appropriate level of care during flight. At the same time, flight operations plan routing, weather considerations, crew scheduling, aircraft readiness, and—when needed—international permits and customs arrangements. Ground ambulances are coordinated at both the sending and receiving locations to ensure true bedside to bedside air ambulance service. Throughout the process, we provide regular updates to hospitals, care teams, and family members, and once all safety and logistics requirements are met, the aircraft is launched with continuous critical care provided until arrival and medical handoff.
Timing depends on clinical needs, aircraft availability, hospital readiness, and regulations. Our medical air transport team works closely with bedside providers to move quickly and safely.
Bedsidetobedside medical air transport means we meet the patient at their bedside, manage all ground and air transfers, provide continuous care during flight, and hand off directly to the receiving medical team.

During transport, patients receive continuous, high‑level medical care from our certified flight clinicians. Our aircraft operate like fully equipped mobile ICU units, with advanced monitoring systems, critical‑care life‑support equipment, and a full range of medications tailored to the patient’s needs.

Intermountain also provides an added layer of support through our 24/7 TeleCritical Care service. When needed, our flight crews can instantly connect with board‑certified critical care physicians — including the option for a secure video consultation. This real‑time access to expert guidance strengthens clinical decision‑making throughout the flight and helps ensure safe, seamless, bedside‑to‑bedside care.

Often, yes. It depends on the patient’s stability and the space required for medical equipment. International flights require passports for family members.
A dedicated air ambulance transport coordinator manages communication between case managers, bedside teams, pilots, and clinicians to keep the process clear, coordinated, and smooth.
Upon arrival, our medical air transport team completes a direct handoff to the receiving providers, ensuring they have all clinical information needed for a safe and seamless transition of care.

You all need to be acknowledged for your phenomenal work. The nurses are incredible and I’m truly thankful for them.
