About our program

The PGY2 Thrombosis and Hemostasis Management (THM) residency at Intermountain Medical Center provides training with clinicians in a variety of clinical specialty areas with a focus on thrombosis and hemostasis management. The resident will work with patients along the continuum of care from the acute care to outpatient settings and participate in system clinical workflows. The resident will focus their training at Intermountain Medical Center and work with nationally recognized experts in the field. The focus of our program is to develop residents into highly skilled pharmacists, fully integrated within the healthcare team and able to lead system anticoagulation efforts. The program includes participation in a biweekly educational seminar with other THM residency sites across the country to provide additional learning and presenting opportunities, as well as networking and professional development.

This dynamic residency program provides an ideal environment to improve clinical knowledge and practice evidence-based medicine, interact in multidisciplinary teams, improve communication and ability to manage complex patients. Residents will get vast experience in research, quality improvement, precepting, and presenting in various formats. Graduates of this residency program will possess the skills necessary to be highly competitive for career opportunities in a variety of settings.

Intermountain Medical Center (IMC) is one of the largest hospitals in the Intermountain West and the flagship of Intermountain Healthcare. It is a major adult referral center for 6 surrounding states and more than 75 regional healthcare institutions. The campus is made up of five specialty hospitals, a central laboratory, a physical plant and an education center.

The PGY2 program offers rotations in a variety of clinical settings which will equip the resident with the skills necessary to perform confidently as a thrombosis and hemostasis management expert.
Rotations
  • Graduate from an ACPE-accredited pharmacy program with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree
  • Successful completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency
  • BLS and ACLS certification
  • Eligible for Utah pharmacist licensure
  • Expected to obtain Utah pharmacist licensure within the first 90 days of the residency program
  • Attain "achieved" on at least 80% of all objectives (including 100% of the objectives in competency areas surrounding patient care)
  • Completion of one ACPE Accredited Presentation and one interdisciplinary continuing education presentation
  • Obtain BLS and ACLS certification
  • Completion of a research project manuscript, poster presentation, and podium presentation
  • Precept learners on rotation
  • Interact with and teach medical residents and advanced practice clinicians
  • Develop a business plan proposal for service line development, growth, or optimization
Residents will staff every third Saturday for our anticoagulation and transition of care telepharmacy services and 7 additional weekend shifts supporting our DOAC management services. Additionally, the resident will staff 5 on-call weeks for our anticoagulation service, one over a minor holiday and one over a major holiday week.

Candidates selected to the pharmacy residency program are paid a competitive resident salary and receive a complete benefits package.

Resident Salary

  • Approximate PGY2 stipend: $76,000 per year

Pharmacy Resident Benefits

  • Classified as full-time employees of Intermountain Health
  • Paid a competitive resident salary
  • Eligible to receive a complete benefits package including retirement, health, dental, vision and life insurance
  • PTO is accrued at the rate according to hospital policy (currently approximately 25 days per year). This rate is subject to adjustment. The resident should generally expect to use ≤ 17 days of PTO (plus 8 paid holidays) during the residency year and may not use more than 25 days
  • Access to other employee benefits such as the employee wellness program, Employee Assistance Program (EAP) support, and the employee discount program.

Professional Development

  • Residents attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and an appropriate regional residency conference as determined by the individual sites.
  • PGY2 residents are also generally permitted to attend an applicable specialty conference.
  • In addition, internal CE and other professional development opportunities are offered on a regular basis.
