Intermountain Cancer Centers participate in a variety of research activities, including:

Patient-oriented research:

  • Studies of mechanisms of human disease
  • Studies of therapies or interventions for disease
  • Clinical drug trials
  • Studies to develop new technologies to address disease (e.g. genomic sciences)

Epidemiological and behavioral studies

  • Studies among cancer patients and healthy populations that involve no intervention or alteration in the status of the participants. Instead, these studies involve analysis and surveillance of environmental and other causes and risks, patterns, outcomes, and behaviors related to disease.

Health services research:

  • Protocols designed to evaluate the delivery, processes, management, organization, and financing of healthcare (e.g. quality improvement and cancer care delivery research).

Intermountain also participates in “big data” initiatives, such as the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) CancerLinQ program, the world’s largest and leading cancer informatics program that connects and analyzes millions of electronic records to provide data for more informed decisions about cancer care.

Our involvement in cancer research helps us not only drive progress in cancer treatment for patients locally, nationally, and internationally, but also gives our patients access to innovative therapies for the best possible outcomes.
