Personal Bio & Interests
Jeffrey R. Smith, MD FAAOS is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon (American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery) whose focus of treatment is total hip and total knee total joint replacement surgery. His training included medical school at the University of Utah Medical School where his excellence was recognized as he was selected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He did an internship in general surgery at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Denver, Colorado followed by a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. He was an active-duty orthopaedic surgeon in the United States Army for 11 years. He completed subspecialty training in total joint replacement surgery during a fellowship at the University of Utah Medical Center. He was director of the total joint residency program at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu prior to his honorable discharge from the service. He has been in private practice in Provo, Utah with his partner Dr. Wayne Mortensen since 1994. Although earlier in his career he treated the full array of orthopaedic conditions including fractures and ligament/tendon injuries to the entire musculoskeletal system, over the last 15 years he has focused on hip and knee reconstructive and restorative surgery. He treats all conditions of the hip and knee but focuses on those that have left the joint damaged through arthritis, injury or congenital deformity that may require joint replacement. He pursues the least invasive intervention with the least risk to provide satisfactory relief to those in need. That many times requires replacing the joint. He uses the latest techniques including direct anterior minimally invasive total hip replacement and partial and total knee replacement. Latest techniques render this surprisingly relatively pain free. Many times this can be done safely with same day surgery. His underlying desire is to treat every patient the way he himself would like to be treated. He has done the training and has the experience to make this possible. He welcomes new and as well as returning patients to his practice.
