While it’s important for everyone to stay up to date on their vaccinations, there are some diseases that affect the LGBTQ+ community more on average. Gay and bisexual men should be vaccinated against Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and even Meningitis. Doctors also recommend people living with HIV to get other vaccinations to protect their immune system.

Routine screenings look for signs of a disease even when a person does not have obvious symptoms. Some general examples include cancer screenings, checking blood pressure, blood sugar levels, or cholesterol. LGBTQ+ specific examples include HIV testing, cervical cancer screening, and anal cancer screening.

Most insurance plans cover one preventive health exam every year. This is the time to talk about your general health concerns with your provider.

Mental health care

Due to many factors, LGBTQ+ people face higher rates of mental health problems than non-LGBTQ+ people. It may be helpful in complex situations to involve a psychiatrist or dedicated mental health provider. Primary care providers are also well versed in screening for conditions like depression and anxiety.
