The Pulmonology Center at Primary Children’s Hospital treats children with a wide range of common and complex respiratory and sleep conditions. Our team provides a full spectrum of care, from your child’s initial diagnosis through his or her treatment and recovery.

Pulmonary Function Testing

Primary Children’s Hospital has four Pulmonary Function Labs, 1 room is located in the main hospital and 3 rooms are located at the Eccles Outpatient Building, 2nd floor, Station 3. The Pulmonary Function Lab (PFT) is comprised of seven registered respiratory therapists who perform a variety of pulmonary function testing for children serving many subspecialties: Pulmonology, Hematology, Oncology, Pediatric Surgery, Allergy, Immunology, Rheumatology, Cardiology, Orthopedics and Community Based Physicians. Diagnostic testing includes:

  • Spirometry
  • Lung volume measurement
  • Diffusion capacity
  • Post-bronchodilator testing
  • Medication trial testing
  • Sputum induction
  • Exhaled nitric oxide measurement
  • End tidal carbon dioxide measurement
  • Maximal respiratory pressure assessment
  • 6-minute walk test
  • Methacholine bronchoprovocation challenges
  • Exercise challenge studies

They also provide respiratory education for pulmonary disease management, medication delivery, proper use of equipment, and airway clearance techniques.

The PFT Labs typically perform more than 3200 studies per year and provide respiratory education to over 1000 pediatric patients per year.
