Anthony Beutler, MD named AMD of Primary Care Sports Medicine

Intermountain is pleased to announce that Anthony Beutler, MD has accepted the position as Associate Medical Director of Primary Care Sports Medicine. In this role, Dr. Beutler will lead Intermountain’s employed Primary Care Sports Medicine physicians. This clinical leadership role is shared within the Musculoskeletal Clinical Program, Specialty-Based Care, and Intermountain Medical Group, and will report to Hugh West, MD.

As Dr. Beutler coordinates Primary Care Sports Medicine activities with physician leaders across the organization, he will also work closely with Adam Chandio, Hospital Administrator at TOSH, who has been leading Intermountain Healthcare’s Sports Medicine Outreach and Sports Performance efforts for the past year. Adam and Dr. Beutler will work in partnership with Ryan VanderWerff, Executive Operations Director of the Musculoskeletal Clinical Program and the Medical Group Orthopedic Surgery Division, who serves as the liaison between MSK and Sports Medicine. Dr. Beutler will also work closely with Casey Leavitt, MSK Executive Director, in developing clinical protocols with the MSK Clinical Program. He has tapped Drs. Spencer Richards and Darren Campbell to be part of his physician leadership team.

Dr. Beutler started with Intermountain in June and practices on the Utah Valley campus. He will have the following responsibilities:

  • Lead Intermountain's employed Primary Care Sports Medicine physicians
  • Lead Sports Medicine Outreach and Partnerships with Adam Chandio
  • Direct the Intermountain Sports Medicine Fellowship at Utah Valley
  • Initiate research efforts in high-value, multi-disciplinary treatments for musculoskeletal conditions
  • Lead efforts to establish system-wide care standards and uniform performance measurements

Guide the “Re-imagine Musculoskeletal Care” initiative to optimize triage mechanisms/care pathways to more efficiently and precisely connect patients with optimal MSK diagnoses and treatment plans
Dr. Beutler currently serves a faculty member in the Department of Family Medicine at Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, Maryland where he established and directed the Injury Prevention Research Laboratory for more than 10 years. He is an internationally recognized educator and researcher in sports medicine with a specialty in musculoskeletal injury prevention and treatment. Dr Beutler is the former director of the tri-service military sports medicine fellowship in Washington, D.C., and former educational director for 12 sports medicine fellows each year in the National Capitol Sports Medicine Consortium. 

Dr. Beutler pursued his Family Practice residency at Travis Air Force Base and completed his Sports Medicine Fellowship at USU and the U.S. Naval Academy. He received his M.D. from Duke University and is an active member of the Alpha Omega Alpha (AΩA) Medical Honor Society. Outside of work, Dr. Beutler enjoys basketball, bike-riding, waterskiing, and spending time with his wife and five children.
